Hi everyone,

I'm getting back into 40K after a loooong time away ('Ere We Go was the last Ork "codex" I used), and I'm looking for answers to a few quick questions:

1. Do Imperial Guard do well, all things being equal?
2. Are they "One-trick ponies" list-wise for tournaments (In other words, will every IG player be bringing basically the same list?)
3. How much will I have to spend (ball park, US$, full GW prices) if I want to purchase 2500 points worth of IG, with some flexibility (not using every model I have to get enough points)?

and finally:

4. I remember vehicles being basically useless (one lascannon hit and BOOM) in older editions--how is that now?

Thanks!

P.S.: Anyone in the North Denver area want a game? PM me! I have my own table at Valhalla's (the handicapped table) any night of the week!

I love the guard but I can say honestly that they do NOT do well "all things being equal." That probably sounds worse than I mean it but the point I'm trying to make is that if you're facing a marine player with a 'take all' list and you have a 'take all' list you will probably lose more often than you win. By tuning your army to face the most common opponents in your area you will be able to win more often than you lose though, and by buying more minis than you will use you can assure that you can make those adjustments.

It's hard to say how they will do in tournaments since there isn't enough experience with IG in any tournaments since 5th came out or since the new marine dex has come out. Historically though most tournament guard lists are just variations of 3 tanks, stationary infantry squads, and some allied inquisition stuff. If not that then mechanized (chimeras).

You will have to spend lots and lots of money. Exactly how much depends on what kind of changes you want to make to your forces. For example, I run the same 3 infantry platoons every time, but I change everything else like veterans, rough riders, and tanks.

Vehicles are still subject to one shot kills. There is no more lucky glancing hit though, nor are there multiple tables for hitting different parts of the vehicle. There is just one table now with modifiers making it easier or harder to score the kill. Any glancing hits will no longer be able to kill a vehicle (without something else modifying it).

Hopefully, I haven't made them sound to horrible since I think there's a lot they can do in 5th edition with creating their own cover and speedbumbs being more effective.

Thanks for the reply!

Participation in any GW game easily equates with "lots and lots of money," but can you give me a ball park figure for a basic 1500 points?

Only if you like losing Kill Points. As Glaive said, they will also cost you a lot of money, but not as much as quietus is proposing as long as you use GW models, not Forgeworld.

Overall the IG have been nerfed by 5th edition, so I'd wait until the next codex comes out fairly soon.

Armies Owned: Iron Warriors, Tau

Undead Titan Log
Malfred: Terminator Armor has always had room for extra boobage.
Drake_Marcus: It's true- that's why the Space Wolves love termie armour so much. The whole "bear" thing they've got going on is just a thinly veiled cover-up of their huge, hairy cleavage.

IG will get an update in the next year and hopefully then they'll be upto snuff. But as it is they have more going against them than for them.

I used to game at Valhallas and Hobbytown in Westminster.

I guess in lieu of Guard I could always play another horde--how are Orks with their new book?

to tell the truth I dont know yet. I just got back into the game after a year and a half break. so I am starting fresh with fith ed and orks. I never played them before and I got a little over 3/4 of my list complete. So I can play games now its just a matter of picking them up when I can.

we will have to set up a game soon. this week is out for me due to prior obligations. but yah more than willing to play. and i love the feel of Valhallahs. the people there are great.
