My first round opponent was a young Necron Player who was new to the game. I didn't have the heart to tell him that the max unit size for Destroyers is 5. His army is roughly as follows:

Destroyer Lord - Staff of Light, Phylactery, Gaze of Flame, Resurrection Orb
Necron Lord - Staff of Light, Phylactery, Lightning Field, Resurrection Orb

20 Necron Warriors
20 Necron Warriors
20 Necron Warriors

1 Wraith
8 Scarabs - Disruption Field x 6
6 Destroyers

Monolith
Monolith
Heavy Destroyer

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Deployment

He won the roll so he chose to pick his deployment zone and get first turn. His first mistake was to choose the quarter that had fewer objectives (2 versus 3 in the one opposite).

He set up his Warrior units in large clumps, almost base-to-base near objectives with his Monoliths in the back field. His Destroyers, Heavy Destroyer, and Destroyer Lord were set up on one flank. His Scarabs were deployed in front of his warriors on the opposite flank. The lone Wraith was as close to the center of the board as possible.

I set up two of my Vindicators as far forward as possible on my right flank with the other vindicator on the left flank. Also on the left flank was my Rhino to taxi the Grey Knights backed up by the Librarian with his Jump Pack. In front of the two Vindicators on the right I put a Tactical Squad in a base-to-base line to give cover saves against the impending Destroyer fire. Land Speeders were set up centrally so I could move them wherever they were needed most or keep them hidden behind the building.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Turn 1

I didn't try and sieze the initiative as I wanted second turn for objective grabbing. He inched his Monoliths ahead and shuffled around his Warriors a bit, but kept them in close formation. His Destroyers, Heavy Destroyer, and Destroyer Lord moved 12" on my flank along the board edge, but in a huge clump. The Wraith hopped on top of the building but wasn't close enough for a charge. The Scarabs advanced towards the Rhino and Grey Knights.

His small amount of shooting was ineffective. The Heavy Destroyer hit a Vindicator but he rolled a 2 and failed to penetrate. Instead of going after Vindicators, his Destroyers shot the marines in front and killed 3.

I moved my Grey Knights up to meet the Scarabs and advanced the Rhino as cover for my Librarian. The Vindicator advanced on one of the Monoliths and blew it up. The Land Speeders shifted slightly to get LOS on the Wraith as did the Tactical Squad. The pair of Vindicators maneuvered to get range on the Destroyer mob. Between their two shots they got got 13 hits and downed everything but the Destroyer Lord, taking the other units out of the game. The Land Speeders and Tactical Squad opened up on the Wraith causing 4 wounds but all saves were made.

The Grey Knights assaulted the Scarabs and wiped them out effortlessly (S6 attacks versus T3 multi-wound bases).

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Turn 2

My opponent's Destroyer Lord zoomed forward to take out a Vindicator, but then he remembered that he didn't buy a Warscythe. Oops. He charged anyway and failed to do anything with S5 vs Armor 10. The Wraith charged the Tactical Squad and failed to do anything and finally failed a 3+ save from a power fist wound.

4 Necron Warriors had range and LS to a Vindicator, however they also failed to do any damage.

My two large Tactical Squads in Drop Pods came in along with both varieties of Terminators. I came in behind LOS off of the Librarian's homer and ran forward a bit to ensure a charge next turn. I dropped the pods near objectives, one landing on target next to the wrecked Monolith and the other scattering 8" away from the Objective near the huge mass of Warriors. Both squads were positioned out of LOS as I had more than enough assets to deal with the Warriors.

I moved my Tactical Squad back toward the objective and within rapid fire range of the Destroyer Lord. The Land Speeders followed suit to help knock off more wounds. Vindicators on the right flank continued to advance on what was now a huge mass of 2 units of Necron Warriors tightly packed. The other Vindicator adjusted slightly to get clear LOS on the the Warriors. Grey Knights moved up and got into the Rhino to prevent taking casualties from possible small arms fire.

All 3 Vindicators hit or scattered minimally. Casualties, however, were minimal as my opponent made many cover saves. 13 Necrons were down (not dead, due to Resurrection Orb) when all was said and done; one of them failed their morale test, fell back 4", then regrouped at the beginning of Turn 3. The marines in the back field had better success, causing 2 wounds on the Necron Lord between its plasma gun and combi-melta. The Land Speeders knocked off the final wound.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Turn 3

6/13 WBB rolls were made, then 1 more when a unit was teleported through the working Monolith. The unit of Warriors able to move freely bunched up in the corner of the building to avoid getting hit by the Vindicators again, but all it really did was ensure a charge by my Terminators who would otherwise have probably been out of range. The other unit of Necron Warriors on the far left of the field fired at the Drop Pod and got a Vehicle Shaken result.

I started my turn by rolling a 3 for my final Drop Pod unit and placing it on top of the objective in my back field. It landed roughly on target and I was comfortably within 3". The Vindicators moved up again on the right flank to get range on the remaining Monolith while the other stayed put. Terminators advanced on both sides of the hiding Necron Warrior unit. The Grey Knights got out of the Rhino and moved within charge range of the Necrons who had emerged from the Monolith. Both units of marines from the pods in turn 2 moved up to the occupied objectives. Further away from the action, my Tactical Squad spread out so that it was within 3" of two different objectives.

Vindicators fired on the Monolith and took it down. Grey Knights downed 3 or 4 Warriors with their dual incinerators and storm bolter fire. The Terminators on both sides of the other unit did the same, downing another 3 or 4. The marines from the pods added a few more to the count, getting me closer to Phase Out.

The assault phase came and I charged in with everything I had. The Grey Knight Terminators weren't in range to assist the other Grey Knights on their charge, so they joined the fray with the Librarian and Space Marine Terminators. The Librarian killed 3 models by himself, but died to return attacks by 4 Necron Warriors. Then the power fists struck, it was gross overkill, and the entire squad was killed outside of Resurrection Orb range. The Grey Knights did a number on the other unit and forced them to flee, just barely catching them in the sweeping advance. At that point he was reduced to below 25% and Phased Out. Game over.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

At the end of the match it was a Massacre in my favor, 22-1.

Yeah, it was pretty brutal and was over pretty quickly. All in all I think lost my HQ and 3 rank-and-file marines.
