Well I kind of moved near Toronto, actually.

What do people think of this. Comes in at 238 points.

Autarch
Power Weapon, Lasblaster, Mandiblaster, Swooping Hawk Wings
1x 5x (or 6x for 259 points) Swooping Hawks
Exarch w/ Power Weapon, Intercept and Sky Leap

They can fly, Fleet and Assault. 9 Power Weapon attacks on the charge. 6 hit. 2 dead marines. Plus the rest of the squad.

Or for 327 points. Fearless.

Baharroth
5x Swooping Hawks. 348 for 6.
Exarch w/ Power Weapon

Compare to say Banshees in a Wave Serpent for around 300 points. After shooting losses, 21 or so attacks on the charge. 10 hit. Probably better off with Banshees, or tucking the Autarch in a squad of Dire Avengers. Or Shining Spears, of course. Or Warp Spiders .

Executing Exarch

Los Angeles

First off, why would you ever put troops with 1 base attack, no hand to hand weapons, and no special hand to hand rules into close combat? It just sounds like insanity to me. Oh yah, and they are S3, T3, 4+ save. All around, they suck in close combat. Not to mention that the configuration you are suggesting sucks up a hq slot as well. Lets look at a comparison with banshees.

So you get the Autarch with the exarch and 7 hawks for ~300 points. You get 10 banshees in a wave serpent for about the same price.

Shooting marines
Hawks ~ 1.2 dead marines
Banshees ~ 1.1 dead marines
Wave serpent ~ .2 from just the underslung catapults
Advantage banshees

Hand to hand
Hawks ~ 2 from power weapons + .8 from hawks = 2.8
Banshees ~ 5.8 dead marines
Advantage banshees...by almost double

In later turns, the damage from the hawks themselves goes down by half (2 attacks down to 1) but that doesn't matter much since its the exarch and the autarch that are really doing the damage. The banshees only lose 1/3 of their offensive power since they go from 3 attacks down to 2.

All in all, hawks are just bad. They don't really do anything well and they are expensive. Sky leap mostly just gets you into touble. You deep strike, maybe kill something with the hawk bombs, but probably not, and then you shoot ineffectualy with your guns. On the enemy turn, you are all nice and bunched up just screaming to be shot at with blast weapons. On your turn, whatever survives is free to run around and do whatever they do (which is not much). Sure it can get you out of things like hand to hand, but you have to survive long enough to get to your turn, and that isn't all that likely.

Banshees at least have the protection of the wave serpent for the turn where they are sitting around waiting to charge (since they can't charge out of the serpent once it has moved).

The only way I would ever take hawks is if they change them dramaticaly somehow. Either drop them down to 12 or 13 points each or up the range on their guns to 30" or something. Currently they are just too frail, too expensive, too weak, and too close to the enemy not to get slaughtered before they do anything.

Threads should be like skirts: long enough to cover what's important but short enough to keep it interesting.

I think the Power Weapon option could benefit from Furious Charge.
