what do you guys think are the best overall force powers. Of course alot of them depend on situtations
such as having the epistolary upgrade and if the librarian has terminator armor. It is also important to use powers that complement the rest of your force. So what powers are good when? What will on average be the most useful ones to consider, and what kind of combinations can be expected?
My thoughts-
avenger: drop pod/mechanized
might of ancients: assault army
quickening: solo (jump pack preferable)
vortex of doom: termie armor (so you can still move)
machine curse: termie armor (so you can still move)
gate of infinity: any type-its the most uueful imo because with the lowered statline you dont really want to be in combat with librarians often (if without termie armor) so it gets you out of a bad situation
null zone: against seer councils/demons
smite: worst power others like vortex and avenger do comparable shooting attacks and with lowered ballistic skill and short range isnt that useful
force dome: kind of a mixed bag, its a good all around like the gate, probably more useful in assault armies, where you expect the librarian to get some attention

The only one I'm less than impressed with is Machine Curse.

My WHFB armies were Bretonians and Tomb Kings. |

Gate could be really cool if it works with teleport homers.
If that were the case, I would bring gate & null zone, as these two are the only game changers that the librarian can bring in my opinion.
You can get the equivalent effect of the other powers elsewhere, usually for less.

Gate of Infinity does not work with Teleport Homers but it does work with Locator Beacons. As an FYI, Teleport Homers can be taken by scout and tactical sgts, beacons can be taken on drop pods and scout bike sgts.
Have to agree that Gate of Infinity and Null Zone are the best overall. Their uses are self explainatory and many. They really add to the flexible nature of the new marine list. As for the others
-Marines don't need the shooting options and frankly most of them are dumb.
--Machine Curse is really blah.
--Vortex could easily scatter on the lib or the unit they are with.
--Smite is just so-so as a psuedo plasma pistol.
--Avenger is the only shooting power that seems pretty nice but it is still not all that great compared to Null Zone and Gate.
-The assault oriented ones are lackluster since they only affect the librarian
--Quickening is pretty meh since only the Librarian benefits. A solo Librarian is a dead Librarian.
--Might of Ancients woulda been nice on an Epistolary if Instant Death wasn't ignored by most of the scary multiwound models. As it stands though, s6 can be gotten fairly easily with relic blades and s6 and 2d6 pen is not that enticing.
-That leaves Force dome, which is ok when combined with Honor guard, command squad or assault squad but isn't terribly awesome with the 5ed cover rules.

Iorek: "Snoogums, you're right. Your arguments are irrelevant, and they sure as heck aren't going away." |
