Florida Congressman: Palin 'Don't Care Too Much What They Do With Jews and Blacks'
Email

ABC News' Teddy Davis Reports: Florida Democratic Congressman Alcee Hastings pointed to Sarah Palin on Wednesday to rally Jews to Obama.

"If Sarah Palin isn’t enough of a reason for you to get over whatever your problem is with Barack Obama, then you damn well had better pay attention," said Hastings. "Anybody toting guns and stripping moose don’t care too much about what they do with Jews and blacks. So, you just think this through."

Hastings, who is a member of the Congressional Black Caucus, made his comments in Washington, D.C., while participating in a panel discussion sponsored by the National Jewish Democratic Council.

Asked what the congressman meant, Hastings spokesman David Goldenberg told ABC News that he was trying to argue that Palin is an "extremely conservative woman who is out of touch with mainstream America."

After saying that Palin "don't care too much" about Jews and blacks, Hastings argued that African Americans and Jews should come together behind Obama because there are many issues on which they agree.

"Just like Jews, blacks care about affordable health care, energy independence, and the separation of church and state," said Hastings. "And just like blacks, Jews care about equal pay for equal work, investment in alternative energy, and a woman's right to choose."

Asked about the Hastings criticism, Palin spokeswoman Maria Comella said, "We’re taking a pass."

As a rule of thumb, the designers do not hide "easter eggs" in the rules. If clever reading is required to unlock some sort of hidden option, then it is most likely the result of wishful thinking.

I'm confused. Your title states that they were called racists but no where in the article does it call anyone racist, just that this person doesn't believe that the others have the same interests. It seems a bit extreme to jump from just being a stupid statement to rephrasing it and adding a spin to it.

Point taken-corrected.

I think we need to start a thread from politicians - the open mouth insert foot thread.

I don't think Dakka has the bandwidth to withstand a thread of that size.

True that.

And no one thinks to ask who the 'they' is that is allegedly going to do things to 'blacks and jews'. This politially invented 'us vs. them' junk is ridiculous, and people need to be called out for it when it happens. And, yes, both the right and left practice it. Politics make strange bedfellows, since usually the black politicans are ranting against the jews, who are often portrayed as the 'them' that control all the world's money, the entertainment industry, and all the world's politics.

I'd tend to disagree with "usually." I don't think guys like Farrakhan are representative.

I'd tend to disagree with the strange bedfellows comment too. A fair number of Jewish folks were active in the civil rights movement in the 60s.

Meh. If Republicans want to use this in the Presidential campaign Obama can just join in the criticism in order to portary a lack of partisanship. Mudslinging against party figures is not really productive in an election which is being sold as a battle of independents.

It's a time honoured tradition for pundits to focus on nutty House of Reps members to attempt to paint the whole party in the same light. I'd be opposed to the tactic but its good to show just how crazy some of these guys are.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

I saw an argument from a pundit that in the wake of the Bush admin people are sick of politicians lies more than anything else. He argued that the drops in Bush’ approval ratings didn’t come from bad news in Iraq or in the economy, but from each revelation about a lie. I’m not sure I completely agree, and the recent dip to 19% came directly from the economic turmoil and not from a lie, but I think there’s a reasonable argument there.

This is backed up by the amount of time the Obama campaign is using to highlight McCain’s lies. Which is good and all, but would be even better if Obama’s campaign wasn’t telling a few porkies as well (nothing on the scale of McCain’s efforts, but still lies).
