ok, not 100% if this is the right thread, but here goes.

currently working on an ork army, and in more recent times im wondering if its worth taking tanks, or just units that perform the same, but at a slightly cheaper points cost.
fed up of watching battlewagons get crushed by a melta, and got to thinking, how much less damage would an army sustain if it had no tanks?
lascannons, melta and such would be pretty useless, and since people bring plenty of anti tank these days i could make expensie units wortless on the field.

but, as comes the problem, ill be missing things like killkannons, boomuns and zzap guns (mobile ones)(2: i love them, unpredictable, yet allways come through when needed)

and due to the recent codex i think troop is the way to go for ork, mainly due to such low AV vehicles.

need some suggestions on units worth taking, pick holes in this please!

Thanks

-JD

Edit: spelling.

in my experiance, anti tank weapons are going by-by in favor of anti troop guns.

But Orks without tanks are very solid

i was just thinking along the lines of:

a single lascannon will destroy any ork vehicle in a game, and at around 150+ points that will hurt.

in a 6 turn game the most it can do is kill 6 orks, and at 18 points for 3 boyz that makes a massive diference.

im not a fan of ork shooty tanks. i think whatever they do can be accomplished better by the other choices they have. Trukks for speed and battle wagons for death-rollers and as transports make sense but everything else doesnt really. tanks in 40K are only really good at killing infantry most of the time and ork infantry will do that job better for you.

taking up the mission
Polonius wrote:Well, seeing as I literally will die if I ever lose a game of 40k, I find your approach almost heretical. If we were to play each other in a tournament, not only would I table you, I would murder you, your family, every woman you ever loved and burn down your house. I mean, what's the point in winning if you allow people that don't take the game seriously to live?

I play 40K because of the ability to run tanks. Lists without tanks make me a sad ork (except nids because they have no choice).

However having said that, orks can do very well without tanks, but I personally find the massive horde list stupidly boring to play. Effective or not.

I think it really depends on your style of waaaaagh!! lol not war. i have found that orks with tanks and with out tank are just as good as each other

you can do what i do and do 180 orks with kans and dreads . a few lootas and rokkit boys usually take care of bigger scarier things.

i was thinking along the lines of:

HQ: meks
Elite: large unit of lootas, large unit of tankbustas and meganobz
troops: 150 boyz, 30 ard boyz
Fast: stormboyz
heavy: not sure if points allow. but if they do then big gunz.

i just get fed up of watching my 2 looted wagons get killed on the 2nd turn and the battlewagon dying a turn later.
ad then costing me over 400 or so points.

Less to paint though, with all those points rolled up in one model...

I really should be spending my time more constructively.

I while ago I really backed off on the number of vehicles I run in favor of more "infantry" and it really paid off. When everyone was running las/plas anything with armor less than 13 was a risky venture. Now with more people going for anti-horde and cover denying weapons the light armor is a bit safer to venture out in.

I'd say run a few vehicles, but not so many or in such a way that makes you army dependent on them. Troops tend to be much more survivable, but like you said, you're losing a lot of the big boom that ork vehicles can bring. All infantry list are perfectly viable if built right, but frankly Orks can already bring such numbers you can afford to toss in a few of your favorite toys. If you do go all horde though, do the rest of us a favor and please learn how to play it quickly, then pass the knowledge on to your fellow local ork players...
