The fact that Zzaps no longer auto hit completely removes them from contention in my book. They might be ok in a Big Guns Battery because there are 3 of them at BS 3. But sticking them on a vehicle is a complete waste of points now.

the zzap battery is just fine. 127 pts buys you 13 models with 3 guns, each with a single reroll to hit.

It's not as good as some of the other stuff in the ork dex, but it's not bad either. It's your only source of long range ap2 and the potential to handle AV14 at range.

5th ed Rule book which has an updated and correct statline for all the weapons in the ork codex says zzapp guns do not roll to hit. This makes them A LOT BETTER

I believe it also has the melta rule?

No, I don't think Zzap guns have the Melta rule. That's the Zzap Weirdboy power.

I had not noticed that, but you're right, the 5 ed rule book does say that Zzap guns do not have to roll to hit. However, that changes nothing: the rule book does not override the codex. The FAQ could alter the codex, but not only does the FAQ not remove the to-hit requirement, it even mentions that the Zzap gun does need to hit.

Q. Is the roll for a Zzap Gun’s Strength made
before or after the target unit is chosen?
A. The roll is made after choosing a target unit,
but before rolling to hit.

Until there is a FAQ or a reprinting of the Ork codex that removes the to-hit requirement from Zzap guns, they will have to roll to hit.

The summary section at the end of the rule book is riddled with errors. The Eldar wave serpent is listed as having a front armor value of 2, and the WH/DH assault cannon is still listed as Heavy 3 without rending, despite GW releasing the "wargear codex" in a failed attempt to bring older codices wargear up to date. Bloodthirster and bloodcrusher saves are listed as 4+/3+ and 4+/5+, respectively, instead of the correct 3+/4+ and 3+/5+. The summary section is best ignored.

I'm not the biggest fan of Ork Artillery, however, they are my pick if I take Artillery...
