Anyone have any idea why the store in Danvers and Harvard Square closed? Rent in Danvers couldn't have been much with the Peabody mall renovating, and I find it hard to believe that Boston doesn't have enough interest in the hobby...

I used to work at Harvard Square and the Danvers locations. Harvard Square had ridiculously high rent and it was a poor, poor location. It was down a side street and you couldn't tell the shop was there until they put up a small sign after at least a year and a half, but the rent was the big kicker there.
Danvers was the last to go because it was doing the best out of the three, I'm sure cost vs. sales was a big factor, there are a ton of independents in the area and people tent to be VERY loyal to their FLGS. Don't even get me started on the Natick location.....
Zamboni, where do you currently play?

And so, due to rising costs of maintaining the Golden Throne, the Emperor's finest accountants spoke to the Demigurg. A deal was forged in blood and extensive paperwork for a sub-prime mortgage with a 5/1 ARM on the Imperial Palace. And lo, in the following years the housing market did tumble and the rate skyrocketed leaving the Emperor's coffers bare. A dark time has begun for the Imperium, the tithes can not keep up with the balloon payments and the Imperial Palace and its contents, including the Golden Throne, have fallen into foreclosure. With an impending auction on the horizon mankind holds its breath as it waits to see who will gain possession of the corpse-god and thus, the fate of humanity...... |

I've mostly just been collecting and painting lately... Actually, not too much over the summer, but now that it's getting cold outside I'm more willing to stay in and play/paint/model. I'm closest to Elite Hobbies in Dover, NH, but end up going to Toy Soldier in Amesbury, MA. I'm much more into the hobby aspect, but tend to pick models as if I played. I wouldn't mind getting a game in sometime. I play both Fantasy (Dwarfs) and 40k (various Imperial forces). I'd still like to finish up my Baneblade and "blood" it in a game!

Toy Soldier is a nice place, nice people working there as well. I built a few gaming tables for them couple years ago.

Yeah, it's a store I've only recently been going to. I know it's been around a while though, and with that much history, it's still nice and clean. The owner's a nice guy too. I've yet to play a game there though, so I don't know what the gamers are like.

Never played a game there either, just built some tables and chatter with the owner and some players, seemed like a good lot..

Just a heads up. If you were travelling to Harvard Sq and Danvers. Hobby Bunker in Malden would be a good try. Ton of space, 6 + tables to game on and a really cool staff.
Lots of Privateer Press, Games Workshop, historical renactment games to.
And if you were interested I believe a PP pressganger is usually down there to.
Don't mean to sound like a commercial. It's just where I grew up.

Are there a lot of places to game in Boston and the surrounding area? I ask because after my masters/PhD, whichever I can get, I'm thinking about trying to get a job out there.

GW opened a lot of stores in MA around 2004 (give or take). I remember when Boston GW was a Bunker.
That's too bad that they're closing down in that state. And if you're looking for a good store. I recommend Danger Planet. It's a great store if it's still there.

I think it is. I think that's the one I stopped in this last weekend. It's just south of Boston and they were having a fantasy tourney. It was the first time I'd been in there.

Another local alternative to the cratered GW stores would be Danger Planet, in Waltham (western suburb of Boston, close to rt. 128). Excellent selection of Warhammer, PP, FoW and other games and hobby products. 11 game tables in the basement, with a wide assortment of terrain, and robust communities for 40k, WHFB, and FoW.
