Greetings all.

I've just signed up with DakkaDakka - I've been listening to the Podcasts for a while now. Seemed like the thing to do was have a look at the website and sign up.

I've been playing on and off for 30 years or so. Started with old school war gaming in New Zealand (Ancients Battles - 5mm (Achmed Byzantine and 25mm Japanese 17th Century) then moved on to Avalon Hills Panzer Leader and Squad Leader. Once in the USA I began playing RPGs (D+D and Traveler with a range of others including Paranoia). The RPGs I found to be fun but lacked the rule base to support the mass battles that I liked so it was back to British war gamming rules to try to cater for mass fantasy battles when I found Warhammer and Rogue Trader.

I have always preferred the British nihilism over the US Monty Hall / Star Trek happy future sort of worlds. Don’t know what that says about me

I collected a few different small armies – squats, harlequin, Imperial guard, space marines. Then gave it away so I could study.

I’ve come back to it all just as 4th edition was closing out. Started rebuilding my old Guard Army and built up my Valhallans as the 6th Valhallan Regiment based loosely on the German 6th Army circa 1942. I found painting 100’s of grey guys was getting pretty tedious and decided to find something with a little colour. I rummaged around in the back of the shed and found my old Space Marine models. I have dusted them off and started to rebuild them as Ultramarines. Then 5th Edition came out. I’m not sure whether to be happy at all the nice new Ultramarine models because I’m going to be able to incorporate them – or unhappy because there will be an increase in the number of Ultramarine armies. I’m trying to stay away from the 1st and 2nd companies as I think everyone will be doing those. I’m looking at building 3rd, 4th and 6th Companies.

I tend to build “fluffy” armies rather than rules mechanic or mathematically optimal armies. I like the 40K fluff and have read many of the Black Library books. One of the biggest disappointments of my Guard Armies has to be how poorly the guard fluff translates into the rules. Oh well such is life.

I would class myself as an intermediate level player.

wait wait wait wait... huh..?

Actually, the new codex changed nothing about the amount of Ultramarine players. In fact, it actually has decreased the reason for people to use them, as the old units that only the ultrasmurfs could get now either no longer exist, or are usable with any army.

More power to you for trying to find variety in the smurfs.

I'd go with the 6th company. I like how vague they are, and the fact that they are a reserve company gives them a different flavor. Just my humble opinion though.

Welcome to dakka!

(edit) I realised that my comment could be construed as me saying that I think that there is no reason to play Ultra marines. What I meant was that GW has given less incentive (in the form of sparkly units reserved solely for the Ultras. I didn't mean to insult your army... sorry if I caused offence

97% of people have useless and blatantly false statistics in their sigs, if you are one of the 8% who doesn't, paste this in your sig to show just what a rebel you are

No offence taken. I was looking at how they were working the Ultramarines and it seems that they are the "hero heavy" chapter. The cost of the models is enough to put anyone off. Almost switched to Crimson Fists - one dab of paint is all it would take. But I'm set on my way now.

(Question edited out - will start new post with it)
