Well gents, remembrence day is upon us on the eleventh. so, how about a compilation of songs?
just make a nice list. please, no propaganda, if possible. What qualifies as propaganda? Anything that shows something contrary to the facts, that is, all wehrmacht soldiers killing jews, or white supremacist stuff etc... unsavoury stuff, let's leave it at that... try and keep it neutral, don't provoke people. just express opinions on the songs themselves, not on the war. leave that to historians. (ironically enough, propaganda posters are fine in general, basically, just don't care about them)
anyway, without further adue,

Somewhere in south-central England.

It's a long way to Tipperary.

We're here because we're here.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

Adrift within the vortex of my imagination.

If you look at the translations of the songs of various participant nations you will rerad a lot into the mental character of the nation and the regime behind it.

I cannot see any British song with the wording of Panzerlied with it nihilistic outlook. "Our tank shall be a metal grave". The singer expects to become a casualty sooner or later.
Normally if death is mentioned it is either as needed point of sacrifice or as a form of protest e.g much of Rupert Brooks or Tennysons poetry.

Other German songs emphasise pressing an advance at all times. The chorus of the Sturmartillerie lieden 'Panzer voran, voran' - Armour forwards, forwards.
It ties in the the doctrine, if pressed for the defence attack anyway. Ardennes 44, Kursk etc.
However the Germans had primarily a defensive infantry based army, yet most of the lieden revolved around the panzer. Sturnartillerie lieden being an artillery song after all. This shows where the focus of the thinking was, all on the small mobile hitting elements and ignoring the large mass of infantry.

While British military thinking embraced Blitzkrieg early (though failed to sink in right at the top, particularly in procurement departments) still had an infantry first mindset.
Again this is due to the centralised political focus, while in Germany this was concentrated on armoured attack, to the British the morale and mental wellbeing of the British Tommy was paramount.
Many early songs emphasised morale, stoicism and no small amount of poking fun at the enemy.
'Dont hang your washing on the Siegfried line' comes to mind here.

The major difference being that The British were more than happy to let the soldiers listen to swing and pour the majority of the propoganda into cellulose. Film shorts were popular, and available even at the front in the early war.
Later as the Allies shifted from a holding to a more proactive engagement media had to change too, however the major difference is that most songs popular with soldiers were those the soldiers sang and composed themselves, parhaps with a little help on editing.
Thus most songs became about sweethearts back home, food, the weather, damn trenches and in WW1 especially no small amount of fatalism. But such mores were no in the official script of the trailored music.

Ther fatalistic songs were mostly officer caste invantions, such music not being sutiable for lower ranks for morale reasons, but heroic amongst fighter pilots.
Even today pilots and naval officers are traditionally expected to gather around the mess piano and sing, however nowadays voice quality has fallen. Last time I heard this it was more akin to a football crowd, though the words were the same.

n'oublie jamais - It appears I now have to highlight this again.

It is by tea alone I set my mind in motion. By the juice of the brew my thoughts aquire speed, my mind becomes strained, the strain becomes a warning. It is by tea alone I set my mind in motion.
