My FLGS is running a Finish-an-Army-Challenge. Each participant is supposed to bring in any army, any stage of painting, with the goal of finishing it. The contest runs for 3 months with each person bringing in a block of 750 points at the beginning of the month for baselining (state of completion) and then bringing it back a month later for judging.

Here's what I started out with for Block 1

Here's the pics of completed Block 1 figures. The original deadline was tomorrow, but actually got pushed back a week. I tried to stick to the deadline though for pacing purposes.

Carnifex - planned: 1, completed: 1

Warriors - planned: 3, completed: 3

Spinegaunts - planned: 21, completed: 22 and 2 hormagaunts; I painted up the hormagaunts as test figures for Block 2

Spinegaunts - planned: 10, completed: 14

Hopefully, you're already familiar with Endgame. If not, check it out. It's an amazing store with great staff. If you are, Block 1 will end November 15th and everyone should be there to present their Block 1 figures for judging and get their Block 2 figures baselined. I should be there in the morning. Track me down and say hi.

Block 1 is done and now onto my next block of 750 points. However, in addition to my Block 2 figures, I'm also working on some others. This weekend, I focused on basecoating the carapaces and doing the base wash. I got just about all of them washed. In the queue are:

1 Hive Tyrant
3 Carnifexes
1 Lictor
8 Genestealers
40 assorted Gaunts
18 Ripper Swarms.

How are you painting these?

Is it just 1 layer colours then devlan mud or one of the other washes?
Because it looks great.

Really like the purple on the genestealers best.

Here's the step by step for the gaunts. I'll eventually get one up for all of the Tyranids I do.

http://www.kan.org/michael/mkp/tyranid_gaunt.php

I used Rustoleum High Heat (Almond) for the basecoat, painted the carapace in Mechrite Red, then stained the entire figure with Liquitex Raw Umber.

really nice looking models, classic nid scheme pulled off really well are you using something like that army painter stuff or is it just achieved with washes?

i notice that alot of people use the finance section in a paper for painting, is it just that useless a section?

When you give total control to a computer, it’s only a matter of time before it pulls a Skynet on you and you’re running for your life.

I'm using a wash made from Liquitex Raw Umber over an almond spray primed basecoat.

My workspace

I've also been working on the bases so that I can transport them in a steel toolbox. The foam trays just don't cut it with the 1) quantity, 2) sharp pointy things all over them and 3) the relatively large footprint per figure.

For most of my figures, I either glue a nickel on the bottom when there is no slot (like the ork on the right) or part of a penny. I like the extra weight on the plastic figures and it helps they stay upright on slopes.

For the Tyranids, I also picked up a number of rare earth magnets and am attaching one to the bottom of each base (like the Genestealer on the left). Warriors get 2 magnets, the Carnifex gets 5. I got mine from KMJ Magnetics. $30.00 for 250 of the 3/16" dia. x 1/16" thick disc magnets.

When I'm done, I should be able to store my entire army on the refrigerator door.

YO DAKKA DAKKA!

YES!!!

We can play warhammer in space! None of that irritating floating around crap! Just need to sort out the dice issue... magnetizing one side doesn't seem like as good an idea in that case.

Wow, a red-and-bone Tyranid army that works well. I like the red especially; looks nice and threatening. Nice work!
