There is very little barring another character on dragon, or a GD that can take out a Chaos lord on dragon.

I think the dragon still takes up a hero slot.. checking into it.. I never seem to have my codex around when I need it. If it does Ill prolly add a shagoth to list 2 inplace of one of the mages

As a rule of thumb, the designers do not hide "easter eggs" in the rules. If clever reading is required to unlock some sort of hidden option, then it is most likely the result of wishful thinking.
But there's no sense crying over every mistake;

Yar im going to redo the dragon list and repost it. With a shaggy instead of a mage. Ill prolly take both other mages out and go for another unit of knights...
I used to run my Chaos with the lord on dragon as the only character I had.. hes usualy all you need

Might want to drop the Banner o' Wrath in list 2, with no other casters it's not likely to do too much 
Otherwise I vote 2. All those knights are a bit boring but an army going suicide style (no magic defense) gets a cookie from me!
