I have. It was a lot of fun, though I recall being fairly hard in some spots. I never did play the sequel. After beating the game it was fun to use cheats to make overpowered heroes, like a Superman clone, and just tear through the stages.

As a rule of thumb, the designers do not hide "easter eggs" in the rules. If clever reading is required to unlock some sort of hidden option, then it is most likely the result of wishful thinking.
