...and it is Matt Smith. The only thing I can think of he's been in is History Boys. Uhmm. So yeah. No good picture I could find at the moment but I'm not that impressed. If they were doing a 90210 version of Doctor Who I guess it could work but at the moment I'm not that impressed or please. Still, who knows maybe he'll do fine. His Wikipedia page.

Amidst the mists and coldest frosts he thrusts his fists against the posts and still insists he sees the ghosts.

You're not that impressed? I'm not sure how you could be, as you haven't seen *his* Doctor yet. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt for now.

I just think its a little bit of a meh, I mean when you look who BBC was putting on the faves to be the new Doc list including the possibility of the first Black Doctor.
To go with a young guy just makes me roll my eyes, its like this new Demons series starting tonight, can a teenager save the world from Demons.

I'll give him a chance, but if he starts worrying about his problems and trying to figure out where he stands in the universe I'll be thinking, 'okay wake me up when the 12th Doc gets here.' I'm certainly not looking for Dr Who the Vampire slayer anytime soon.

So.... how big is DR Who and how is it viewed in countries outside the Uk then ?

I'd thought, until fairly recently, it was pretty much just a British thing, but it seems it's much better known-- especially stateside than I'd thought.

I thought it might be quite well known in Australia as you get/see a lot of UK ( well BBC anyway right ?) TV-- is that correct ?

The poor man really has a stake in the country. The rich man hasn't; he can go away to New Guinea in a yacht. The poor have sometimes objected to being governed badly; the rich have always objected to being governed at all

The government owned station shows Doctor Who, and replays get a regular run on pay TV on UKTV. There isn't much hype about the show though, the only stuff I ever hear about it is online when Brtis talk about the show. I understand this is pretty different in the UK, where a major part of the shows success has been the hype machine behind it.

As for the new Doctor... I'll tune in to see how he does. I was pleasantly surprised by Christopher Eccleston, but while everyone else thought David Tennant was wonderful I thought he was quite annoying... silly even.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

Dr Who has historically been quite big in Australia.

I remember watching it (3rd doctor episodes on) back in the mid 80's and into the 90's and repeated many times.

Most people like Tom Baker the best.

Its shown in prime time here in Australia but I don't know what the ratings are like.

But if a programme doesn't perform in primetime its usually shifted within a couple of episodes.

I recall watching the older Tom Baker Dr. Who as a child and wondering why the actors were wraped in foil,as well as watching a film from the 60's(maybe early 70's) in wich Peter Cushing played Dr. Who.
Recently,Sci-Fi (American cable network) had been showing episodes of a "new" Dr.Who, but it appears to have been canceld...I suppose most "Yanks" just don't get the good Dr.

According to wiki, Doctor Who rates about a million viewers an episode, which is quite strong for cable. There's no news of any cancellation that I could see. It obviously isn't anywhere near as big in the US, but it looks like it'd be wrong to say Americans don't 'get' the Doctor.

How many people had heard of David Tennant before he played the doctor?

Less than 50% I'll wager. Personally I'll wait until I see some episodes before passing my judgment.

How many of the previous Doctors were "stars" before they came to the role?

Looks ok, i was hoping for a old and wise doctor this time, as we had our hyper, crazy doctor last time.

Looks ok.
