It comes installed by default with Windows which is what most people's OS is, and ordinary home users (like my parents) don't know any better.

Are those banners indicating how many users?

There's also a very large captive audience behind corporate firewalls still running IE6 and Win2K or older. They probably will be running that for years to come thanks to writing web apps for IE6.

No, I'm not bitter I'm writing HTML that was cutting edge in 1997 in a corporate environment.

At work we use IE for some corporate sites that don't support standard HTML, and we have other sites that don't support non-standard HTML so we have to use FireFox as well.

I read that the coming IE does not support non-standard HTML so millions of sites -- about 70% of web pages, by one estimate -- will stop working.

As an aspiring? programmer having to deal with browser compatibility is pretty much exactly why I stick with, or hope to stick with industry/ engineering applications.

Killkrazy: I'm horribly offtopic, but the site admin can set a meta or conditional tag that will render >IE6 content in IE7 format. Or the page authors can use a DOCTYPE and properly code for that. IE8 should then be able to render the page properly, although it may look different than was intended.

My employer doesn't use DOCTYPEs so content is rendered in quirks mode. I'm hopeful, but I'm not exactly confident, that the admins can set the meta tag properly.
