Subject: CSM & Demons at Team Tournament, 2200 points

Player-A and I went to a Team Tournament at Dicehead Games this Sat.
The Rules:
Each player got 1100 points to make a list with. Each player got their own Force Org chart (oops...). Items that affected "you" only affected your half of the coalition (thus, you can't Guide your teammate's unit, or let them Waaargh), while both partners could benefit from Doom.
The Field:
There were 12 teams in total, with an odd proliferation in Tau most obvious among them. (Tau/eldar, Tau/Orks, Tau/CSM).
Our entry:
Player-A and I figured, lashes + Khorne Daemons = win.
He brought:
DP, Lash, MoS, Wings
DP, Lash, MoS, Wings
8 Berserkers w/Fist champ, Rhino
8 Berserkers w/Fist champ, Rhino
5 Plague Marines w/Rhino
Obliterator

I brought:
Herald of Khorne w/Chariot, Unholy Strength
Herald of Khorne w/Chariot, Unholy Strength
Herald of Khorne w/Chariot, Unholy Strength
Herald of Khorne w/Chariot, Unholy Strength
3 Bloodcrushers w/Rending champ
4 Bloodcrushers w/Rending champ
5 Bloodletters
5 Bloodletters
5 Bloodletters
5 Bloodletters
5 Bloodletters
(I left the Soulgrinders at home [they'd been taken out of the main force for Adepticon prep], so I had to sub in 10 Bloodletters for each at the last second. Serious trouble resulted, must be more careful with packing)
Round 1:
Mission: Annihilation, Pitched Battle (+ you may call for an orbital barrage, which is an s6 ap3 pie plate during any one shooting phase of the game, it comes in on a 2+)
Opponent:
Orks/Orks
Warboss on Bike, PK, Cybork, etc.
Warboss on foot, PK, Cybork
SAG Mek
KFF Mek
Trukkboy unit w/PK Nob
Trukkboy unit w/PK Nob
20 slugga boys w/PK Nob
20 slugga boys w/PK Nob
Snikrot + Co. (burnas included)
15 Lootas
15 Stormboyz w/PK Nob
Battlewagon w/4 Big Shootas
Battlewagon w/4 Big Shootas
big Grot unit
My assessment:
Not quite how I'd have done Orks, but its dead killy anyway. I love in particular how they've got 3 different Elite choices...and they are all awesome. What a dex! Anyway, they've got 4 Mech elements, which we'll ice if they get close, and 2 fighty HQ choices, which we ought to be able to steal KP from. Orks in KP is always extremely hard, but I think between the Trukks and Warbosses they've got enough non-giant boy squad KPs for us to have a try at. Still, hardest mission/enemy to face, right off the bat. They've taken advantage of the 4 HQ slots, but I think they've mucked it up with the SAG Mek (not grand at any time), and the Warboss on foot (wtf? boy squad doesn't need more fighty, its' got a Nob).
Game start: They win the roll to go first (DOH, it would really help to get some demons down before they had time to get moving, just because with their trukks/BWs everywhere it's hard to land).
Ork turn #1: They just roll south. Lootas shoot down a Lash Prince (ouch, KP against Orks who go first...and take out a Lash, this is getting better and better...) The SAG Mek is with the Grots, the KFF Mek is in a BW and they are moving in formation to both get the save.
Our turn #1: Daemons drop. I get the good half (crushers, Heralds), and drop them pretty much in the Orks face, while the Rhinos full of Berserkers back me up. Our remaining Lash moves up and scoops the Stormboyz into a circle, which I hit with our orbital bombardment, killing 7, they held.
Ork turn #2: They pile out the Trukkboy squads and kill a Herald and a Bloodcrusher squad. They also use the Stormboy remnants on the crushers. Critically, they've turned their BW's around and send the Orks back into their own zone to beat up that Herald. This is huge, as we would have slaughtered them if they'd charged when the Berserker counter charge hit. I didn't expect them to play so skillfully. Big trouble. We are down quite a bit here.
Our turn #2: We take out the trukkboy squad with Khorne countercharges and an artistic lash. 2 Bloodletter units land, and try and hide their KPs. We advance on their positions.
Ork turn #3: The boys pile back into the battlewagons. The lootas shoot a Herald who's right in their face, but only do 2 wounds. They send the Bike Herald to kill one of the Bloodletter units...but catastrophe strikes them when the letters chop his head off before he can swing (ludicrously improbable, 10 attacks needing 5's to hit, 6's to wound, and he has a 5+ invul save). They then massacre forward into range of the Battlewagon.
That's the tide turner. Our troops (the Herald who didn't get gunned down and the fortunate Bloodletters) reach their wagons which are immobile with the boys still inside. one pops, the other gets immobilized, but it's pretty much the fin, as the Orks have to come out, and after their charges they die to the Berserker/Bloodletter countercharges...except...
The Warboss wasn't in B2B when his unit got slaughtered...and he rolls insane courage, allowing him to mutual suicide with the Berserkers! The game tilts back the other way...
Ultimately we are surrounding their final unit (the Grot squad) with both Big Mek's in it, when they decide to end the game. The roll says to go on, but they don't think there is time for a final round. Sure.
So, wow, heck of a game, a feverish counting of KP ensues. Ultimately they've got 12 and we've got 13. Ridiculously close, and with a great deal of luck both ways.
Some of the breaks we couldn't have won without:
#1: My initial deep strikes going flawlessly
#2: The bloodletter unit killing the charging Biker Warboss and massacreing 5".
#3: The wounded Nob & his last Boy of the Stormboyz moving over to suicide on an Oblit, but rolling a 1, losing a man and breaking and running in their movement phase
#4: A Berserker charge that needed a 6 on difficult terrain to arrive...and got it.
Some of the breaks that nearly turned things around:
#1: The lootas knifing a Herald of Khorne who charged them with 2 wounds left
#2: The Warboss rolling insane courage
#3: Snikrot beating down a Bloodletter squad, Lash Prince and Oblit with a titanic multi-charge, despite terrible attack allocation.
Round #2:
Capture and Control, Dawn of War
The enemy:
Space Marines
Captain w/...I don't have the heart for this one.
They had an average Space Marine list with Lots of bikes and some drop pods, and they our extremely competitive coalition on the mission that is absolutely our best. 2 Lashes and Khorne daemons absolutely ripped them apart. I got the wrong half of my list and it didn't matter in the slightest.
Round #3:
D3+2 objectives w/Spearhead
Enemy:
Space Marines/ Dark Angels
SM:
Chaplain
Librarian (infinity gate, null zone)
2 tac squads w/ rhinos
Big Assault Terminator squad w/Storm Shields and Thunderhammers in Land Raider Crusader
DA:
Belial
5 Terminators
5 Terminators
5 Terminators
Land Raider crusader
The game:
We go first, and I get the strong half of my army. I drop them right out in enemy territory, while A's CSM move forward and take one objective, and threaten the second. Oblits shoot ineffectually at the Land Raiders.
They respond, deploying the Terminators from their LR's and charging into the Bloodcrushers/Heralds. Specifically, the SM double charges 2 Heralds, while Belial + the Terminators double charge the 2 Bloodcrusher units. The Terminators make 6 for 6 invul saves and smash the Heralds (Null zone is a big help), while Belials group kills 5 Crushers (wtf?), losing like 2 Terminators. Oh, a 5 man tac squad charged another Herald (the last one got destroyed in a deep strike mishap), and unsurprisingly starts losing.
This is a serious problem. We've basically lost our fighting wing in one round, while the enemy's Terminators are basically intact. It was a big mistake to land in territory unprotected by CSM counter-charge. I always underestimate the charging power of the new SM.
I get in most of my letter units, and dump them on the unoccupied final objective. They go in after me and take me out. They make a stab for our objective with Belial + co, but without the SM around and the Null Zone the Lash Princes are able to repell it long enough for Berserkers to get there.
Essentially, the rest of the game is the fact that neither side can get the other's objective, while we both are able to contest the middle one. Maddeningly, we can't scratch either Land Raider till the last round, when a pair of DPs miraculously hit 5 times on a swiftly moving land raider and blow it up.
They make a last ditch gambit to pull out a win, but rhinos stop their land raider from driving onto our objective (hooray for ramming rules), while the librarian's Gate mishaps and dumps him in corner. The battle comes to an end in a draw.
Ultimately, we are 2 points ahead of the guys we had a draw with in the last round, so we win the tournament. Prize support is excellent, we use it to snag some swag to convert into Daemon Princes.

All in all, fact is that Warhammer 40K has never been as balanced as it is now, and codex releases have never been as interesting as they are now (new units and vehicles and tons of new special rules/strategies each release -- not just the same old crap with a few changes in statlines and points costs).

The combination of Lash in the Chaos list with any of the fighty daemons is just brutal. My wife, who has played exactly four 40k games in the last four years, and I did a team tournament where I ran the slaanesh marines and she ran the slaanesh daemons and ran the table, including phasing out a necron army before their second turn. (Her four games include the three at this tournament, BTW).
There is so much synergy between the lists, it is a really good mix in a team environment.

@ex, en, groz: Thanks guys! I enjoy writing battle reports, it gets me thinking on the game and makes sure I learn.
@Redbeard: Yah, I think having 4 HQ slots in one game is a bit much. I prefer the Adepticon format myself.
@Aldonis: Yeah, you guys are tough. They should have won that game, but we got some good fortune at the end.

We'll probably be there, but with a weaker (Adepticon compliant) list.

Oh if only I had a Librarian in power armor I might have made that Deep Strike with a smaller base and a good roll to end the game
( of course a librarian in power armor would have been mowed down in game 2 after taking a s... load of shots from hammerheads, guardians, crisis suits...... ack!!)
Good game guys. It was nice not to play a list that had 3 hammerheads and have to take 3497529745180481 each turn Demon/Chaos Lash is a hard hard list to beat I was happy with a draw. Killing all those Deathwing was a good thing, they need to go out and recruit some warriors with a little better hth skills anyhow
Down with the Tau!!! Dang mercenaries selling themselves off to everyone in the doubles format!!!

You guys coming back for the 31st? Be cool to get a rematch. Next time we'll be all-Daemons.

Yes we will but with different partners. I promised a new player that I would partner and show him the game. Figured doubles would be a good format for that.
