Subject: 1000 pt unit limits??

My group is getting back to playing games again and we are starting at lower points right now
then move to larger games... But one trend i am seeing is Heavy hitters like Land raiders
Wraithlords, Avatars and the such in these games..
At 500pts we usually use the 40k in 40 minute rules but you go a little higher and anything
goes...
Anyone have a suggesting to curve this ?? On keeping the big nasty unit types out of a small
point games..

Are they using the full rules?
ie. using the force organisation chart?
Yes, you can have 3 land raiders in a 1000 point game, however you only have 250 points to spend on troops - which means 2 undermanned tactical or scout squads.
A well balanced army should be able to deal with someone who is maxing out on tough critters.
Otherwise, if it is becoming a problem such that many people are finding the games un-fun, house rule it - put a limitation on certain selections.

Bring lots of firepower.
Enough to make them think twice about wasting points on a Landraider in a 1,000 point game.
That's the most fun way to deal with problems like this.

Assuming WH40k is designed to be played at ~1,500, you could try limiting the FOC porportionally.
500 pts:
1 HQ
1 Elite
2 Troops
1 Fast Attack
1 Heavy
1000 pts:
2 HQ (or 1, up to you)
2 Elites
4 Troops
2 Fast
3 Heavy
I'm not sure why you'd complain about a Wraithlord and an Avatar though, they're only like 155 pts each.

libby: naked (100 points)
Land Raider Reedemer + MM (250 points)
Scout Squad (75 points)
Land Raider Crusader (250 points)
Scout Squad (75 points)
Land Raider (250 points)
Total: 1000 points, 3 land raiders
Yes, you only have two scoring units. However, those scoring units are LAND RAIDERS. Try dealing with a land raider at 1000 points, let alone 3. Think you'll have a problem with objective games? Think again. Godhammer pattern sits on your objective and throws 2 lascannon shots across the board, and heavy bolter at anything coming towards it.
Your other two an sit on an objective and effectively deny it to the opponent. Remember, the LR is so friggin huge that it can effectively deny the opponent an objective even if it isn't scoring (since it's big enough to cover the entire capture area).
I suggest you just tell people to "not be a dick." Barring that, saying "nothing AV14, no models with XX wounds, X T, or over XXX points" is a good call. We used to have a lot of trouble with a buddy who had a leman russ in his 500 point army, as it just ate my tiny little marine squads.
The best way really is just to jump it up to 1500 points, where anything goes anyways.
