Subject: So how do Trollbloods, particularly Borka, work?

I have the following models:
Trollkin Hero
Borka Kegslayer
Champions
Assuming these three models, what would you consider getting for a 500 pt. army? Eventually
I want to get Kriel Warriors and eMadrak, but currently those are the only Troll warlocks I like.
I believe this adds up to 218 pts, which leaves 282 for Warbeasts and such.

add in a Mauler, an Axer, and pretty much whatever other warbeast you want and you'll have a pretty hard hitting army.
Rush and the Rage animus are great. Champions are just hard hitting, the hero is too, but I might think about a Fell Caller in his place. He's weapon master with 2 P+S 10 attacks, plus a spray.
Borka is very nasty with Most Pit. Keep in mind you get the free strike when they move the 1" away from you.
The Axer is P+S 15 and the Mauler is P+S 16 on 3D6, and that's just nasty.

Gotta agree with Silver on this one. Mauler, Axer, and Fellcaller (Could maybe even keep the hero). This'll leave you a bit short on Focus regeneration, though, as two beasts (one a light) in 500 points is iffy. I'd add in another light if points allow.
Of Note: Borka seems like Trollblood's infantrymachine 'Lock. Everything he does is centered around a large number of troops. His feat, the keg dying, Mosh Pit... All work best when you've got a lot of models around. And they don't have to be elite troops either. The Kreil Warriors seem just as good as the Champions in certain situations with him.
For a bit of spice, though, Earthborn instead of Mauler seems like it'd be fun with the Axer.
Also, I'd recomend picking up the Trollkin Skirtlifter as an easy "Hero" model in Kegslayer's army. I mean, come on, the model's swigging brew and comping on a cigar. Borka's found his soulmate. (And that sword looks like it's probably got reach... lol Yeah, it's no 'Great Axe', but I'm sure you'll live with the purely flavor and awsomely sculpted Skirtlifter.)

Good idea on the skirt. Probably give me a reason to paint him up.
Maybe I'll plan for two heroes, one champ unit and one kriel unit at 750.

That would work pretty well. The Hero should be in the unit with the Champions, and Kegslayer can stay close to the beasts. I always recommend having an Impaler, the critical knockback can be really handy. Or, if you really want some combat fun and still get some range. Use a Dire Troll Blitzer. It may not be the absolute best unit but it is good. And a riot to play with.

Long Riders are interesting with Borka due to their interaction with Barroom Blitz.
They can Slam something, then their axe can attack something else and Barroom Blitz adds the Slam effect to that attack as well. Each Long Rider can effectively Slam 2 different models during the feat turn.
But, since Long Riders have Reach, you might not get free strikes when Mosh Pit triggers.

I was just aiming for a quick 500pt army for mal to start with.
Borka, like Ironhide, is a great lock, but only FURY 5. His best spell is Most Pit and it's a upkeep. This gives him FURY 4. The Axer is fury 3, and Mauler is fury 5. This means he really doesn't have to worry in small games because only one of them will give him enough fury.
His bomb attack works great against other warcasters/locks. He can hit then bounce and it to them.
The Earthborn is cool and all, but it's better to just stick with the Mauler. Maybe in larger games he can find some use.

Mal, I'm both shocked and offended... Why do I only see 'Black Ogrun' under Cryx? Have you not see the Bloodgorgers, any of the pirates, or any of the Banes? For shame, sir... For SHAME.
(And why no Mercs on that list? Hmmmmm?)
lol All in good fun.

At 500 points, I'd recommend going with 3 light warbeasts - the Pyre Troll, the Impaler, and an Axer. You can replace the Axer with the Bouncer, and that might be better with Borka. Don't forget, your trollkin can screen the light beasts - they're all on a medium base. The Pyre's animus gives +2 damage to melee attacks, he has an AoE attack, and two open fists - so he can throw things. The Bouncer and Axer are both melee lights, but their abilities are pretty different. The Axer is gold just for his Animus, but the Bouncer works pretty well as a bodyguard for locks that like to get into melee (like Borka and both Madraks).
I generally don't like taking a heavy at 500 points. It's nearly 1/4 your points, and most factions have some way to neutralize one heavy beast; either with KD effects, reducing speed, etc. At 750 points, I would take a Mauler.
With the Hero coming out, I think at least one is mandatory in a Borka list for some Liquid Courage. Then throw with the Mauler or Pyre.
Kriel warrios, even at 500 points, can work. Add a Fell Caller to the list. I wouldn't go with the UA, I think it makes the unit too expensive. KWs are nice because they're cheap. Get the Cabertosser though, he's always a welcome addition and is only 5 points more than a seventh warrior.

I would drop the Hero over the FC, unless you can find someone to let you play 14 points over (don't know what your group is like, my group typically would allow it to 'try out something new'). Not having anyway for the trollkin to cope with difficult terrain could kill you. Can you drop the hero and squeeze the swamp gobbers or caber into the list (I forget the hero's points, but I think it's low 30's, so you should be able to). You could also drop the KWs and add a second hero, makes the list more solo heavy than I generally like, but could still be lots of fun with the Pyre chucking two Heroes.

You dont have to take Champions in a 500pt army.. The KW's are really tough for single-wound infantry as it is. Plus a full unit of 10 gaining +2 STR, +2 Movement, or another attack really helps alot in small/and large games.
This is kinda my take for your list using Borka and 3 lights...
Borka Kegslayer
Pyre Troll
Troll Bouncer
Troll Axer
Kriel Warriors (10/10)
Kriel Warrior Standard and Piper UA
Kriel Warrior Caber Thrower WA
Kriel Stone Bearer and Scribes (6/6)
Kriel Stone Elder UA.
Let me break it down just in case someone doesn't understand anything.
Borka's feat allows them to all "slam" with their weapons. Given the possible +2 to STR from the Kriel Warriors, this adds up. The Piper and Bearer allow extended formation and once a game a Tough roll of 4,5,6 for one round.
Fell Caller does what he always does.. The Stone Scribes are a personal touch. They add ARM to your Warriors when using Luquid Courage, and with the Elder attached, can give a STR boost too..
Just trying to give you something else to think about.. YMMV...

Champs should go in every list.
I hadn't thought of dropping the KW for the KSB to get under 500 points, but that's an option too. I like the KSB even as 'KW lite', iirc they have +1 MAT and are Fearless.

Just an update on my Borka.
I went with a low model count of
Borka
Impaler
Blitzer
Champions
Hero
Hero
Fell Caller
Gobbers
I've had some success with this list, but much of it through good dice rolling. I think oomiestompa
wants me to replace my dice soon.
Anyway, Borka's been a ton of fun, and this thread here has lots of ideas for me to incorporate
in the far future (I think June is going to be the month of Long Riders and Horthol, to be
honest), but there are a few lingering questions I've posted to my blog and one important thing I've
forgotten about Borka:

Wait, is it even allowed to make a list without the troll carrying the big rock and his buddies? I thought KSB was something you got when you picked the faction, like the 2 Renegades that come with Magnus.
|
All in all, fact is that Warhammer 40K has never been as balanced as it is now, and codex releases have never been as interesting as they are now (new units and vehicles and tons of new special rules/strategies each release -- not just the same old crap with a few changes in statlines and points costs).

Unless you want to slowly walk across the board, the KSB isn't necessary. It's a nice unit, but I don't think they're an auto-include. Of course, I mostly play Grim.

Borka beat up a girl Tuesday night. Actually, he never got to touch Fiona, as she conceded
the game due to the absolute evaporation of her army except for the midget half of
Herne and Jonne.
However, the player controlling her was my buddy's girlfriend, and she's still
learning parts of the game. Should Borka feel guilty about such wins? I was too lazy
to figure out a different list, so I just brought what all was in the bag.
