I am currently enjoying the experience of eating Miracle Fruit - a special African berry that binds to your sweet taste buds and changes the flavour of everything.
Things taste very odd. Anything sweet no longer tastes sweet, so chocolate tastes bland, licorice tastes like rubber, etc. Anything sour activates your sweet taste buds so tastes sweet. Lemon was very sweet with a hint of sour, raw lime was amazingly sweet as was grapefruit. Beer (becks) tastes disgusting. My wife had a marshmellow and promptly gagged at the bitterness which was very amusing. 'Good and plenty' tastes like rubber and aniseed, with no sweetness whatsoever. Malt vinegar tasted like maple syrup which was very bizarre.
This is quite an interesting experience and if you want to give up candy would probably be worth trying as it basically cuts them down to their basic texture and any additional flavours. Everything that isnt sour tastes extremely dull.
Even spicey food tastes quite sweet. I am eating some more of those onion bhaji walkers crisps and they taste extremely sweet (actually just like a regular onion bhaji now). Very curious!

omg i had that gum before, its so gross that i tried swallowing it, and then almost threw up.
The translated Mysterious fruit seem to describe it better as its so digusting that its not miraculous at all lol .
More like a *mystery to why its still around.

Does it eventually go away?
That would kind of suck if it didn't, because I can't really imagine how bad drinking vinegar would be for your heart.

For me it went away after about 45 minutes, but had a noticeably smaller effect after about 25 minutes.

The first time I tried these I flipped out.
I still want to make muffins with these, but I have a feeling that baking them will destroy the responsible compounds.

I had this once, a few years ago. I've been casually wondering where to find more ever since then... EDIT: Oh, you can get it freeze dried? A great aunt of mine had a plant, but I only ever visited her house once... still, wouldn't mind getting my hands on one of the plants themselves.

Interesting...my wife has about 35 of these in our freezer right now, having a party this coming weekend with a bunch of people to see how everyone reacts. Seems like the kind of thing that is fun to do with a group so you can compare experience.

We had 4 people trying it and everyone was completely different. One person couldnt handle the taste of the fruit and spat it out after a short while. One person suddenly became addicted to limes and ate a whole raw lime. The other person and I were just amazed at the sudden crappy taste that candy got.
When trying it, you dont have to swallow the fruit, just make sure it makes contact with all of your tongue. If you dont swallow then the back of your tongue wont get treated by the fruit, so you'll retain a bit of the normal taste buds there. Dont try it when you are too hungry either or you will not be able to enjoy food for quite a while afterwards.
And yes Iorek, heating it apparently destroys the active protein that gives it the effect. You can always sprinkle some on top of the muffins when they are cooked for the same effect though it will probably make the muffins taste horrible.
