I have yet to play a game. And once I do my opinion on this might very well change.

But I think you ought to be able to reinforce the crew of a ship with the crew of another.

And if a ship has all its crew killed and has not been taken as a prize (like the crew are killed by a fire), you ought to be able to reinforce it and reclaim it.

The following is what I think I might make house rules.

Reinforce: if you have 2 ships that are touching, and have dropped anchor (or moved into contact then dropped anchor). Then you may freely move crew members from one ship to another.
Moving into contact with the other ship dose not cause a collision as the captains have prepared for this.

You may not put more crew on a ship then it original started with. If you move a crew off of one ship, then it suffers -1AD for each crew moved (they are no longer there). If you don’t have a full crew on the reinforced ship then it suffers -1AD (for each lacking crew.

You may, if you wish, take a ship to 0 crew. But it then becomes a derelict ship (note, that it still has its anchor dropped so it will not drift) and may be claimed as a prize by your opponent(s).

Reclaim: if you move a ship into contact with a derelict ship then you may move crew to that ship. If that ship had its anchor dropped then this dose not cause a collision, if it did not have its anchor dropped then it dose cause a collision.

If both ships have a dropped anchor then the crew may move unharmed. If one (or both) of them did not drop anchor then roll a D6 for each crew attempting to reclaim the derelict vessel. On a roll of 1, that crew is lost (fell into the ocean and eaten by sharks… IDK, use your imagination)

You may not put more crew on the ship then what it started with.

You may, if you wish, take a ship to 0 crew by doing this.

I think this would make things a bit more interesting. Say you lose a cruiser due to fire. You could move a few frigates over and get that cruiser up and running again.

If a ship is sunk, then it’s sunk. But if it doesn’t have anyone to operate it, then people can always jump on board and get it going….

Maybe a special rule, you can only reclaim ships from your own fleet… keep those sneaky dwarves from stealing a dragon cruiser.
