Just started watching this after someone recommended it to me. Interesting is all I can really say. I keep comparing it to Band of Brothers, which it isn't.

Are there any Marines or former Marines on the board and if so, have you seen this program? Having watched episode 2 last night I was left with a feeling of, "what the f***?" In this day and age, with lessons supposed to being learnt, how on earth are some of those NCO's and officers allowed to be anywhere near the frontline?

Haven't seen Ross Kemp's Return to Afganistan yet, but looking forward to comparing the two. A mate whose a former squaddie says that there is a scene in the 1st episode where the command to fix bayonets is given. His comment was "you know you're in deep***t when they give that command as it's time to get up close to the enemy."

From a gamers perspective it's great, loads of great shots of humvees and uniforms for painting reference.

"And what is wrong with their life? What on earth is less reprehensible than the life of the Levovs?"
- American Pastoral, Philip Roth

Oh, Death was never enemy of ours!
We laughed at him, we leagued with him, old chum.
No soldier's paid to kick against His powers.
We laughed - knowing that better men would come,
And greater wars: when each proud fighter brags
He wars on Death, for lives; not men, for flags.

From what I've seen, only in the same way as Band of Brothers. It's based on a book that recounts the events. Just seen episode 3 and those NCO's & officers are getting worse.

In fairness I've not had any experience in this field, so have no idea of what really goes on when troops go in to combat. I'd be interested to know how my father felt as he was a Royal Marine in the 60's and served in Borneo.

I was a marine Infantryman in 90-94 time frame. Gulf War I and Somalia. Frequently people do not like to watch movies or tv shows about wars that they were in. I can watch WWII and vietnam movies with no problems. I had to leave the room when someone put in Blackhawk Down. So you might not have much luck finding veterans who have seen Gen Kill and want to talk about it. If you do, you may likely get nothing more than "yes it is accurate" or a "no it is not accurate."

Wolfstan, again many veterans will feel more comfortable talking about thier experiences with other veterans, so your dad may not want to talk about it to you.

Kinda expecting that from him, so would just ask just general non specific questions. Last thing I'd want to do is get him dragging up stuff that was buried. And in fairness yes and no answers would be fine with me regarding the Gen Kill question as I'm not looking to encroach on anybodies memories.

Never seen Generation Kill, but I do know that it was created by the same guy that created The Wire, which is one of my favorite series of all time. So that's gotta be worth something.

I can never seem to see it when it's on, and so far I haven't had any luck with that. I don't think I would go out on a limb and buy it, unless I could find more recommendations to do so.
