Live your life that the fear of death can never enter your heart. Trouble no one about his religion. Respect others in their views and demand that they respect yours. Love your life, perfect your life. Beautify all things in your life. Seek to make your life long and of service to your people. When your time comes to die, be not like those whose hearts are filled with fear of death, so that when their time comes they weep and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way. Sing your death song, and die like a hero going home.

Yup. Its cool.
To get the best out of it, once you've mastered the rules mechanics you should download some of the scenarios off the FFG website. Playing a scenario in "story mode" is much more fun than playing the simple kill-em-all game.
To go into it with the right frame of mind you have to understand this is a "hybrid" game. So a bit simpler than a straight up wargame as there aren't quite so many options. But there are still more options than a traditional boardgame: you've got to pick wargear for all your models for instance.
And with Operation Novgorod just coming out in the US (still not available in the UK yet :() you'll have an excellent expansion pack waiting in the wings for when you're jaded with the original game.

Thanks for that. Been looking at this type of background for awhile now. Wasn't fussed about SoTR as there was no real Brit mythology in it. AE-WWII has it, but it's going to be a couple of months before the Brit stuff comes out, so this could be a good stop gap.

It's worth a punt. And if you take care of it its' re-sale value on eBay is pretty high, so its a no-risk option really.
On the other hand for a quick game between friends its a no-brainer if you like Weird War stuff!
The models are pretty nice sculpts too. The paint jobs are OK in my opinion for prepaints, but can be easily touched up/repainted if that bugs you.
Having played it a few times now I think the best way to think of it is for you and your protagonist to approach it as almost an RPG-lite, rather than a dumned-down wargame. The more plot you can inject into the game the more fun you'll get out of it. Half the fun comes from planning on what kit to take and what combos might work in a given scenario - its a bit like list-building in that respect.
In terms of game mechanics, I've never come across any problematic ambiguities. There's an FAQ on the FFG website though if you feel you need it. The board of course removes any problems around LoS issues (unless you are playing in bad light, and the colours are therefore hard to tell apart!!), and otherwise the rules about who can or can't do what and when are clear, pretty straight forward and reasonably intuitive. Although of course they are translated from the French so sometimes come over a little "wordy" compared to something that might have been originally written in English. No biggy though.
I presume youve downloaded the of of the rules from FFG? If you haven't, I do recommend it. Of course it'll give you a feel for the game, and you won't even waste the paper as if you do end up buying it, a second copy of the rules is handy so you and your opponent can have a copy each to refer to during set up - that's a real time saver when you are wanting to ponder over kit selection.

I've played it once at Gen-Con. It's a fun game, and I almost bought a copy, but I decided I wanted to get a copy of Descent instead. That's the biggie for me, it's not a bad game, I just have other things I think are more interesting. It seems to me to be of limited potential due to the static map, and pre-generated characters. Maybe the expansion fixes this, but it seems like it's got a limited lifespan.
