I assume you're referring to the book series. I'll be honest... I finished the 1st in the series and read the second one half way through. It may just be me, but I got bored...

I've read the first three and have started 'Fulgrim'. I think they're quite good in terms of science fiction writing. It's not to the standard of say Alastair Reynolds but fairly enjoyable all the same. The only thing I don't like too much is that the Space Marines come across as gigantic, childish space Nazis and are quite hard to root for as they travel the galaxy starting gak.

I'm pretty sure he's talking about the anthology book with that title, and not the series as a whole.

Either way, I can't help - at least not yet!

I've ordered it from Amazon, and I'll let you know what I think once I've read it.

Halfway through now. Space wolves and custodes have been the best so far. The sisters one is my least fave so far and has slowed my reading, but hopefully it will pick up as I am not all the way through it yet. I got annoyed by the anime references (evangelion station, the 'aeria gloris' black ship, etc which distracted me from the story too much).

I thought about half the stories were really good, and half of them were really weak.

The First one was really good, I great example of Abbnet's writing.

The Wolf one was also great, it showed some aspects of the great crusade that have not been discussed before.

The best one in my opinion was The Last Church, I thought the concept behind it was novel (if a little heavy handed) and the story was pretty good.

The world eaters one was kind of silly. Yay, Kharn is so badass he can be beaten to a pulp by his handi-capable Primarch and still keep a... Level head?!? WTF?

I have not read the Dark angels one yet

The sisters one was pretty lame (even without knowledge the Anime references).

Well that's a mostly a bummer, but about what I expected. I have all the books in the series so far (including Battle for the Abyss *SHUDDER*), but I don't think I'll get this one.

I'm up to Battle for the Abyss and it's not too bad... especially compared to Descent of Angels. That was one of the worst books I've read in a long time. I'm looking forward to the Space Wolves vs Thousand Sons novel (whos name escapes me at this moment).

Anyways with regards to Tales of Heresy, the good thing about having a book with short stories is if there is one that sucks, there's always several more to read

I'd recommend getting the book purely for "The Last Church" which was one of if not the best story in the book, the other one I really liked was the Dark Angels story, to be frank it shows the build up of tensions between the original Terran Dark Angels and the new Caliban DA. Then the rest are all pretty good, I'd have to say that "The Voice" and the World Eaters stories are probably my least favorite.

I heard Decent of Angels is fine if you look at it as the First Book in a Trilogy, which it is.

@anticitizen013, The Space Wolf vs Thousand Sons book is called Prospero Burns and will be from the SW POV and a second from the 1ksons POV will be out eventually.

Have to agree that "the last church" was the best out of the lot. The sw story was cool if only because it featured de. The world eater story was decent, it was nice to read something into Angron's character besides "MAIM, KILL, BURN!" but Kharn is a joke in that one. Custodes - meh. Sisters - lame. DA - lamer.

I just finished it last night, I think the book is one of the better books in the Horus Heresy series. The stories are great because they give a quick look around the imperium before and during the heresy. The Custodes story is my favorite just because it gives a nice story about them, and IMO there aren't enough stories of the custodes.

I'm about half-way through it now.

So far Dan Abnett's Custodes story and the Space Wolves story are my favorites, and I think the book would be worth picking up for those alone.

The sisters story is more: "Bleh.."

I am really looking forward to reading Gav Thorpe's DA story though ("Angels of Darkness" was awesome!)

I personally was pretty disappointed in the book. I was expecting this book to advance the series somewhat and instead it just sort of meandered around. I really got the feeling that they had a bunch of short stories laying about and just decided to cash in on the popularity of the "Heresy" series and just threw this bunch together.

This was an excellent opportunity to set up the next several books in the series, introduce new characters and update the status of some of the older characters but they did not. Some of the stories were okay, I did not think any of them were particulalry well written.

I hated the first story! Now, this isn't because of Mr Abnetts writing, but more because he pours a load of apple-juice over what the Custodes are/were supposed to be.

In true Abnett fashion he drags them, kicking and screaming, down several levels of coolness and seems happy to lump them in with all the other "super"warriors....the one line about, "no one is foolish enough to guess who would win in a contest between a Custode and an Astartes....just made me absolutely sick.....if the Custodes are so "ordinary" then why not just have bog standard Marines guard the Imperial palace?

Still, I mustn't be too hard on the writer, if GW are so stupid that they allow these contractors to butcher their fluff, then so be it.

Man down, Man down....

I've just finnished it.I didn't think it really revealed anything
about the heresy. The Space Wolf story had nothing to do with the
40k history. If anything, I suspect these are just teaser stories for books
that will be published some time. The HH books are generally good, although
the one that was pathetic was the Dark Angels one,if that was part one of
a trilogy I shudder to think what 2 and 3 will be like!
