Bounding Black Templar Assault Marine

Parma, OH

My own Crimson Lions Chapter faced off against my friends Daemon Hunters army today. I pologize as I do not have any pictures as my wife is out of town visiting relatives this weekend and she has the camera, but thought a battle reportwas in order, even though the outcome was lopsided. Any comments on the battle report, tactic advice or anything else are welcome.

I am not sure about his list other than it totaled just under 3200 points. We started discussing playing this game earlier in the week at 2000 points, late yesterday 3000 was suggested and today he came in to the store with his 3200. Some late additions today to an originally "Lysanderesque" lead force of 2000 points of basically marine infantry with a full squad of Terminators and a Landraider, 10 man squad of Scout Snipers and 5 tactical squads with ML/Flamers saw me add a Marneus Calgar clone in the Armor of Antiochus to lead the force, plus a second Land Raider (Which I just realized forgot to field - Doh!!!), a 5 man Devastator Squad with 4 Plasma Cannons, a Vindicator and an addition of Sergeant Telion to my Scout Sniper squad put me up around the 3000 point mark.

He had something like An Inquisitor Lord and retinue, 2 Stromtrooper units with Plasmaguns and Hellguns, 1 of which was in a Rhino, 3 Grey Knight full squads with Nemesis blades, Storm Bolters, and Incinerators, a Grey Knight Terminator Squad in a Landraider, A Dreadnought, Vindicare and a Deathcult Assassin.

We ended up in a Sieze Ground Mission with 3 objectives, basically in a line about 24" in or so with a Pitched battle deployment. The terrain was basically in a city with several piles of rubble and about 7 ruined buildings from the Cities of Death terrain set scattered about as set-up by the store owner.

I won deployment and set up with my Devastators in the upper floor of a building on my mid-right flank and my Snipers eventually infiltrating just about in the middle of the table in a building on the 1st and 2nd floors slightly to the right and above of one objective, but not within range to claim it. I thne had Marneus sitting alongside my Landraider on my far right with two Tactical squads in the area, one who would enter the Landraider and the other deployed a bit behind it. Due to the heavy terrain I decided not to try deepstriking Lysander and 10 Terminators but instead had them walking just bairly to the right side of middle of my deployment zone, behind where the scouts would eventually end up. Tactical Squad 3 was directly to the left of terminators, with Tac Squad 4 to the left of them. The Vindicator was in an alley to the left of Tac Squad 4 and Tac squad 5 was set up in a building to the far left on the second and third floors.

His deployment Had his terminators to his far right in the Landraider, A Grey Knight Squad in a buidling to their right and another to the outside of that building along with his Dreadnought. His Vidnicare was in a back buidling in the middle on the 3rd floor with excellent lines of site. A Stormtrooper squad in a Rhino was next to that buidling and another was on foot in the street getting ready to advance on the middle objective His 3rd Grey Knight suqad was in a Drop Pod waiting to land on the objective to his far left. His far left had his Inquisitor and Retinue behind building that housed his last Grey Knight Squad, both waiting to support his Drop-podding Grey Knights on their move for the left objective. His other Assassin was deployed outside of a buidling in the middle but due to some unexplained nervousness about my snipers, never left that spot.

He failed to claim turn 1, On my turn 1, Tac Squad 1 went into the Landraider which moved up close to the right hand objective, while Marneus called down an Orbital Bombardment on the Buidling with the Grey Knights on my right. Tactical Squad 2 moved up into the buidling housing the Devastators. The Devastators targeted and saw the same Grey Knights in the buidling across the way that Marneus had targeted, despite their shrouding, something I would roll very good on all game. My snipers, drew aim on his Stormtroopers on foot, My Vindicator moved up to peek around a corner and spotted his Grey Knights in the buidling to my far left. And my Tac Squad 5 took aim at the Landraider with its missile Launcher. My middle two Tactical Squads and Terminators both moved up, the Terminators and Tac squad 3 in the street and Tac Squad 4 through the building in front of them on the far side of which lurked his Assassin who was about 8" away from the middle objective.

At the end of my shooting the Orbital Bombardmetn had drifted off of his Grey Knights and right onto his Inquisitor and retinue, vaporizing 3 of the retinue. The Devstators meanwhile did not misfire nor even drift to much and after 4 Plasma rounds 7 grey Knights were dead. The Snipers dropped 6 of the stormtroopers who were then pinned and the Vindicator eliminated 6 more of the Grey Knights in the buidling to the left. The missile Launcehr bounced of the Landraider but obviously worried the driver a bit as he would inch forward the rest of the game, afraid of the ML and the Vindicator.

On his turn 1 the Rhino with Storm troopers moved up towards the middle objective and unloaded, blasting away at my Terminators. His Drop-pod landed between the middle objective and the one on my right side, with the Grey Knights planting themselves between about halfway between Marneus Calgar, my Squad in the Landraider and my Lysander lead Terminators. His Stormtroopers on foot rallied, his 3 Grey Knights on his left moved up to support the Drop-pod troops but rolled pourly to move through the rubble so were not close enough to really help. The Dreadnought moved up but was only in range to kill and single Tac squad 5 member with his Multi-melta. His Inquisitor and remaining retinue moved up alongside their building. His shooting with his entire army killed two tactical squad members in each of Tac Squads 3 and 5. That ended his Turn 1.

On my Turn 2 Tac Squad 1 in the Landraider disembarked towards the drop-pod squad as Marneus moved across to join them. Lysander moved up towards them as well, sort of splitting the difference between the two objectives, as Tac Squads 2, 3 a 4 moved towards the middle objective and the Disembarked Stormtroopers. The Devastators, Snipers, Tac Squad 5 and the Vindicator sought and acquired new targets. On my Shooting phase the Terminators, Tac Squads 1 and Marneus Calgar unloaded on the Drop Pod Squad and when the smoke cleared only the Justicar and one Grey Knight were left. The Devastators took out the 3 remaining Grey Knights from across the way who had moved up to support his Dro-pod unit, Tac Squad 2 killed the Drop Pod and the Vidicator shot and Killed the advancing Dreadnought. Marneus, Lysander and the Terminators and Tac Squad 1 assaulted the the two remaing grey Knights betwwen the two objectives and in some huge overkill wiped them out although the Nemesis weapons did drop 1 Tac Squad member and two Terminators. I consolidated Lysander and company towards the middle objective as Marneus and Tac squad 1 settled on the Right hand objectvie and awaited the Inquisitor who was suddenly very lonely over on that side of the board.

On his turn 2 the Landraider stayed still to unload everything at the Vidicator and failed to hit or penetrate. His Stormtrooper on my left and the couple of Grey Knights on that side fired at my Tac Squad 5 and killed another marine. The Vincidare wounded Lysander and the Stormtroopers in the middle bathed the terminators with Plasmagun, Hellgun and Flamer fire which actually dropped two more terminators. He then decided he woudl rahter charge than be charged by the Terminators and his Stormtroopers slammed into the Terminators with a wild yell, which soon turned to a scream as they failed to cause a single wound and were pulped for their trouble. Meanwhile the Inquisitor and his retinue failed to accomplish a single thing for the seocnd turn in a row.

At that point the Inquisition decided perhaps they had been wrong about Daemon acitivity in the area and recalled its remaing troops from the field. This game was as about as lopsided a win as I have ever had. I was playing about 250 points shorthanded and still ended up losing.

I think his problems were multiple. First of all he expected me to bring Orks and I think he tried to build his army to fight them. he was surpirsed to wlk in and see my marines but I had not told him I was bringing Orks, he just assumed I would. I told him based on the semi-last minute battle-size change, I did not really feel like pushing 3000 points of Orks around. I guess the lesson learned here, is be prepared for any and all opponents. I think his other major problem was he piecemealed his attack and was both too reckless with some troops and too timid with others.

I will say that on top of that, a major factor was my dice rolling. Other than 4 terminator failed saves, I made just about every roll I needed to, including the rolls to spot his shrouding Grey Knights. My templates did not scatter once and a lot of what hit him was armor killing, and although I think he only failed about an average number of armor saves, I hit with an inordinate amount of hits/wounds, as all game each batch of dice I threw seemed to come up with about 70% hits and wounds regardless of what I needed. I have to say even though I won, I much prefer the closer games as both parties have more fun. If any of you have advice for the Daemon Hunter player I will be happy to pass it on to him.

I hope you enjoyed the report. Sorry for the lack of pictures, I will try and have them next time.

Nice report.

Cheese Elemental-Love does not bloom in 40k. Love burns. It gets turned inside out, set on fire, raped, shot with bolters, and beaten with a crowbar.
