After tossing around the idea of starting yet another 40k army I decided that it would be better to learn a new game system, and after some searching hordes seems to be the one for me. My reasons for joining aside, I have some practical questions.

1. I have purchased the rule book primal. Is Evolution worth purchasing? I ask because I have bought a number of expansions for 40k over the years (cityfight is all that comes to mind at the moment), and never used them because I dont have a normal gaming group and generally only get in pickup games. Linked to this, are expansions different in hordes than I am used to in 40k; do they alter the rules or do something different?

2. I have heard that average game size is 500 pts, is this the sort of list I should plan on fielding?

3. It seems like new characters come out all the time, are the rules all in the rule books, or are they released in the PP magazine? That is, is a subscription to No quarter (at least I think that is what it is called) more necessary than white dwarf?

4. Is there some forum, aside from PP's, that is especially good?

Thanks for any guidance you can give.

Model rules in No Quarter are generally teasers released months before the models or
rule books are. The books are nice, but I can't really advocate buying them if all you want
are the rules. The Hordes Field test for Mark II will begin next year, which will probably
lead to a rules wipe out. If you like the fluff and artwork of Primal, then the rest of the
books will be good fun. If you just want model rules, I recommend asking around about
lists. You'll be able to get the rules for the models when you buy them (the model card).

Yes. The only caveat is if you take a liking to epic warlocks. They are only allowed in 750
point games in the Mark I rules. When the Mark II Field Test rules come out, they'll probably
ease that restriction overall.

Rules are teased in No Quarter, but not all of them. There are generally surprises when the
expansion books finally come out.

Privateer Press's community forum is the best one so far. I post there and here.

The expansion to Privateer's games bring new rules and new figures for all of the races. For example in Evolution there are rules for cavalry and in the Metamorphosis rules for Epic casters. The rulebooks are not in any way mandatory as the rules for the figures are included in the blisters/ boxes. The main content in the expansions are the new figs.

So, now I am slightly confused, is it possible to write up a list before you buy the models? If it is, where do you find the point values?

Beg, steal or borrow the other two books and only buy models that you really like the look of. The rules for the models are in the box anyway.
