I'm not sure if this is the correct forum, it seemed to match .

Anywho, I recently learned that a friend of mine plays Magic. This friend doesn't play 40k, and I sometimes think feels a little left out when I talk about that grim-dark masterpiece. So, I'm thinking I might start up a cheap, casual Magic deck. I'm liking the look (both art and play wise of the blue deck. Before I take the plunge, I have a couple of questions:
[list]1. Aside from a Tenth Edition Blue started deck, is there anything major I'll need?
2. How often does WotC rotate out cards? Back when I played Dark Ages of Mechwarrior, I was rather annoyed when two of my favorite units were removed from legal use.
3. Are the colors desgned for "rock-scissors-paper gameplay"? If I take blue, will a black deck have an inherent bonus against me, for example.

Thanks in advance for any help.

1. Just more boosters.

2. I'm not sure but it seemed like every other set back when I used to play was getting restricted.

3. Not really. Each color has something to work on the other.

1. It's actually typically easier/cheaper to buy the singles (especially online) you want than boosters if you are looking for specific cards. Also, you might want to grab some more cards as the 10th starter decks are like 40 cards and a typical game of Magic uses a minimum 60 cards.

2. This all depends on the format you are playing. If you are just playing casual with your friend, it really doesn't matter. If you go to a store to play Friday Night Magic, they are probably playing Standard format which pretty much means the current core set (in this case 10th edition) and the two most recent blocks of sets are legal (in this case the Lorwyn/Shadowmoor block and the Shards of Alara block). There are a variety of competitive and casual formats out there.

3. Some colors do things better than others, but there is no reason why one color deck cannot beat another. It's more about having the correct answers to their threats and vice versa.

what they said. I've not played for a few years so am unsure of current legal cards.

Colours are pretty cool, not so much rock paper scissors but themed. From what I remember, black is life taking, white gives life, red is offensive magic, green creatures, blue (not entirely sure!)... Colours tend to work best with those ajactent to them on the colour ring from my experience.

The world cahmpion decks are really interesting to have a go with if you get chance. They tend to be easily beaten by decks contructed to do so (same way it's easy to build a 40K army to deafet a trouny one) but when you play with them against someone who's not sure on how it works they are really good. I have an aretfact one that when it goes to play can have 40+ 1/1 creatures in play by go three/four! That's really scary but when your opponent expects it it's easy to build a deck to counter it.

Also check out some of the unhinged cards, they're hilarious!
