Edge of sanity

After realizing several too many broken things that GW did with 40K (and looking over what was played at my FLGS), I've decided to start playing Warmachine. I'm leaning heavily towards Cygnar and would like some help with tactics and general 'don't do this' advice. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cygnar, I think, is a good starter army. Its a nice shooty army.

One of the main reasons I'm thinking Cygnar is that's what I've heard & read. I will not play an army I don't like the theme of.

longgunners can be your friend if you like shooting stuff

Seeing as my first 40k army was Tau, it will at least be familiar ground. What I'm primarily concerned with is mixing up rules between systems.

Your theme will depend mainly on your warcaster of choice.

Commander Stryker: Troops enhancer
Epic Stryker: Melee beatstick self, supports melee troops and a jack
Captain Haley: Denial
Epic Haley: More Denial?
Caine: Gun Mage shooter
Epic Caine: Gun Mage shooter with some tricks
Nemo: Magic and warjack support
Epic Nemo: Multiple warjack support, stormsmith elites
Siege: Ranged troop and warjack support
Darius: Melee warjack support, probably the one most changed for mark 2.

Note: This is not "fluff". We can give you that if you pick a theme. Or I can run down the fluff
later.

Could you tell me about Stryker?

I've also noticed a lot of threads about MkII. Is it a new rule set or a revamp of some sort?

Stryker is the caster in the cygnar battlebox. He is good support caster having spells to better survivability of his troops and giving them some improvements in the ranged combat. His feat is also buffing the models in his army. Here is Malfs article on him.. Stryker is a decent caster, who excels at leading his troops to do the killing, he is not capable of dealing with hard targets himself, he needs some heavy hitters to do it for him.

New edition of WM is coming next January and we had public test of the rules. If you ask nicely you might get the rules from someone as the were a pdf published in the PP's website. It's rewrite of the rules, get basic game stays much same there are a lot of tweaks to the figs and overall balance.

Stryker is the student of the Tesla/Einstein-esque Nemo and former member of the King's Royal
Guard. He's portrayed as the Lawful Good leader of Cygnar, going so far as to start a feud with
the now traitorous Magnus by reporting Magnus's "unorthodox" methods. Magnus
then stabbed the young Stryker in the back and officially became Magnus the Traitor.

Later Stryker witnesses religious atrocities in the name of Menoth and tries to resign from his position.
Instead, the King gives him free reign to wagec war against the Protectorate of Menoth
and he becomes Lord Commander Stryker, or Darth Stryker as the fans call him. He arrests
Cygnaran Menites, releases a secret police, and rouses most of Cygnar's Second Army (there
are four of them) to war.

Oh yeah, and he steals a prototype armor from Nemo.
