SM or orks. Orks have cool shooting weapons but don't hit often. Also Eldar have some pretty good range weapons and some good CC weapons.

Tyranids do not have any tanks what so ever, but they do have killer close combat and monstorous creature ability. Its shooting is limited in range and anti-tank effectiveness, but it has great anti-horde and you can assault tanks down with your monstorous creatures.

If your earlier statement is true at all, Codex: Black Templar(Space Marine varient) is probably a good army for you. Combines very good close combat with very good tank options(superior in many ways to SM) make it a nice army if you want a combination of great assault, long range shooting, ect. They also have some of the coolest looking models for space marines, if you care about that stuff. You can also use the SM models you get in Black Reach.

I say choose the one that looks best then think about how you want to play them.

To OP:

Browse through the warhammer website and see which army attracts you the most visually.

Then figure out if their play style is to your liking ( since almost every army can be tailored for CC or Shooting )

Choose the Forces of Good! (Eldar don't count)

Fight for the Emperors Glory! Or burn as a piece of xenos/heretic filth!

Choose wisely, for there is no forgiveness in 40k.

Of course you should make a choice. Just make sure that the choice is for the Imperium okay?

Most of the armies now have a variety of good army styles available to them.

The trend for the new codexes is to offer much more flexibility in what sort of army you build.

So, I would say the first thing you should do is find out more about the 40K background and see which races inspire you.

Well it's obviously going to be Imperial forces that inspire him! (hint, hint)

Good CC and shooting is Grey Knights, but they have little anti-tank capability outside of their own tanks and Dreadnoughts.

Although some Thunder Hammer/Storm Shield Terminators can kill some tanks in a pinch.

feth those other armies, just walk into your FLGS, put Sly Marbo on the table, and you win.

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made.

It sounds like you would enjoy playing chaos space marines, they have some excellent close combat troops(berserkers, daemon princes), very good shooting(obliterators, noise marines kill you with soundwaves! how cool is that) and killer tanks (land raider, defiler) plus there is so much opportunity for cool conversions that its very easy to make a really unique personalized army.

O H I am in the Webway...

In all honestly I recommend to NOT go with Orks at the start. I imagine they are an enjoyable army to play with, but I started to buld an ork army and after wasting 120$ I realized that I hated it. About 350$ later I got myself a 1850 Deathwing army!

Look at a lot of armies, bat reps, background, and then pick what you like. I use to play Grey Knights before I quit, then I came back, I went to Orks (which I hated) and back to Deathwing, which is kinda like Grey Knights, small specialized elite.

From the sounds of it, I would go with:

Grey Knights / Daemonhunters
Black Templars
Space Wolves
Deathguard (chaos)
Normal Marines

These would be the starter armies I would highly suggest. Grey Knights would be the hardest to play out of those due to them having very expensive models (point wise) with Deathguard being the most forgiving due to their army being very high in resilience.

All I can say is to pick an army that interests you with their fluff, their style, and their models. If you find an army that does that for you, then you will have more fun painting them and building your army.
