pick up the battle box for the army your interested in, it has a warlock and a couple beasts, plus i believe some quickstart rules- this should be enough to get you started, and to get the basic rule stuff down.
after that, i'd say get the primal book for the complete rules

http://www.maelstromgames.co.uk/index.php?act=pro&pre=prp_hrd_sko_ess_201_000

here's a link to the warpack (i guess battlebox is just for warmachine)

it gets you a warlock, 2 light beasts, and heavy beast
which is enough to play a 350 point game or so

http://www.maelstromgames.co.uk/index.php?act=pro&pre=prp_hrd_ess_rbk_101_000 this is the main rulebook.

there are 2 other books, but you don't have to have them, since you get a card with each model that has its individual rules and whatnot

i linked to maelstrom just because that was the first site i thought of, but if you shop around online you may find the items cheaper

games sizes

350 points- these will generally be just your warlock and some warbeasts

500- average game size, warlock, some beasts, and some infantry/solo's

750- somewhat big game size, some sort of setup as 500 points.

can't say i've ever played a game at any larger of a point scale, though its possible to.

after the warpack, i would suggest getting another warlock or two.
changing warlocks can drastically change the way your army works together.

there isn't a force org chart, instead, units have a field allowance, which is listed on the card.

the field allowance is how many of a unit you can run per warlock in your army.

for example- a unit with field allowance 2-
with one warlock, you could have up to 2 units.
in a larger game, with say 2 warlocks, you could run 4 of the unit.

oh-as to the number of beasts and infantry- that depends on the warlock
some warlocks work best with a goodly number of beasts, while others work better with a larger number of infantry.

one thing you could do, is to head over to the privateer press boards, and lurk about the skorne section.
it most likely has a few stickyed threads on getting started, along with general overviews of the varies units.

OK so hoards is more of a small battle game than a huge game like wahammer

Pretty much. The games can get pretty big in Warmachine/Hordes, but it's much more reliant in micro managing the units that you have. In this game changing out a single unit or model has a huge effect on your overall army play. If you swap out a unit in 40k or Warhammer, it changes things, but your overall army is still about the same.

Ok so i downloaded the starter rules and cards but where are the health circles on the normal creatures i only see them on the heros and is thare a human faction i hear cygnar and khandor mentiond on the sight but arn't they in warmachine or have they just not been made yet, if they are the ones in war machien does that mean warmachine can play hoards.

cygnar and khador are warmachine factions. they're a few years older then hordes.

you can play warmachine and hordes together, they're compatible.

the health circles for beasts are the spirals.
for warlocks its a line of boxes
if an infantry or solo unit doesn't have the boxes, it means it only has one health

as for a human faction-closest in hordes would be Circle, i guess, they have some human looking folks from what i recall

SO is it the body section of the spiral and i hope i am not bothering you i just confused.

its no problem

the entire spiral is their health.
mind, body, and spirit.
a beast isn't dead until they're all gone, it helps to make them durable, which is important, since your warlock loses a lot of steam without a beast around

a beasts performance goes down as you lose sections though.
example-when you lose all of the body section, you roll one less die on certain rolls, i believe damage, but i haven't played for a bit so i'd have to check

OK thanks. Now i think that my friend(who will be my only person to play with) will like warmachine do you think it would make sense for him to start warmachine and me start hoards or will i get stomped esaly by his warjacks and guns.

they play together fairly well, though since warmachine has been around longer, he'll have a larger number of models to choose from

if a weapon has a special rule, its generally listed on the units card, or in the case of the book, on the page of the unit with said weapon.

what unit are trying to find info on, exactly

i'll have to find my copy of the book with the cyclops brute in it, but as for the cataphract cetrati (i'm guessing thats who you mean) the multi stands for the multiple rules there weapons have, in this case
brutal charge and reach, which are listed under the weapon in the unit ability description.
