As the title says im hoping to write up a short story involving an ork attack on a Space marine barracks there are gonna be
Black templars and ultramarines in the barracks and it will be written from the view of a marine like a diary or a battle log.
Any tips on what to do?

You could have an ork sniper and he snipers on of the space marines and the alert alarm goes off and it all kicks off!
Also you could have a flamethrower fight and include gory detail + = and lol

Will it be a surprise attack kinda deal? Could make it like a siege type story where the marines are desperately holding out for reinforcements while surrounded by an ork horde. Main force is out on a crusade while the neophytes and a small garrison are left to defend.

Use Chaos influenced orks who has trapped the Sm in the barracks?? As mentioned before in this tread a sige would be awesom.
