hello there dakka dakka, i've been playing 40k for awhile and decided to see what was happening on the forums.
i payed drop guard+close order drill+ suicide command squads in the old codex.
got bored played tyranids, fell in love with stealers, then got sad when i started playing against sternguard and whirlwinds.
promptly returned to IG with the new codex, i've been running anywhere from 4-6 chimeras along with 2-4 leman russ every game, really loving the new guard. getting a little crazy for orders as well 
still working out what to use outside of the heavy support and troop areas. so thats more or less what i'm looking for on here, trying to see what everyone else uses...

Welcome, I'm new here too, and I just started guard (after playing power armored armies for 9 years)
I feel the storm troopers are kinda garbage, as are ogryns, and rattlings, and and sents kinda blow, and the hellhound got dummed down... but I have fallen in love with the bane wolves, since their main gun is under str5 it can fire that, and a h.flamer on the cruise!
Every great IG army should have a Psyker Battle Sqaud (PBS) of course mounted in a chimera, its devistating effect on leadership of non fearless units cannot be ignored for its point cost, plus its another pieplate!
I've also splashed in Witchunters lately, an inquisitor lord with a hood, is invaluable, and it allows you to take an inquisitorial assassin (psst callidus + Psyker battle squad = INSTANT DEATH NOBS - OW)
The inqusitor him/herself can take neat powers too like hammer of the witches which forces d6 enemy psykers on the board (no range, no line of sight) to take a leadership test of suffer a perils of the warp attack, GREAT against certain armies.
Those are just some thoughts on how you can expand out.
