After 15 years of disappointment with Battletech, I was ready to pick up a new game and was introduced to warhammer 40k. Love it. I heard about the 'ard Boyz tournament and decided to try and give it a shot. Played at Crimson Dragon Games in Lindstorm, MN

My list doesn't really follow any proven formation; it was literally what I could throw together for under $200 (the Big Mek, Kommando's and Deff Dread are all made from far cheaper models)

HQ:

Grazzie 225 pts.

Big Mek (kff, pk, Cybork Body, Bosspole) 125 pts.

Elites:

10 Nobz
(2 pk, Waaaagh! Banner, Painboy, Grot Orderly, Cybork Body, Bosspole)
(Trukk, Red, Armor Plates, Ram) 420 pts.

9 Lootas
(One mek with Big Shoota) 135 pts.

15 Kommandos (2 Burna's, nob, pk, Bosspole, 'eavy armor) 225 pts.

Fast Attack:

4 Deffkotas (4 TW rokkit launcha's, 2 buzzsaws) 230 pts.

Troops:

30 Boyz (3 big shoota's, nob, pk, Bosspole, 'eavy armor) 240 pts.

30 'ard Boyz (3 big shoota's, nob, pk, Bosspole) 355 pts.

Deff Dread (dccw, Skorcha, Armor Plates, Grot Riggers) 110 pts.

10 Nobz
(2 pk, Big Choppa, Kombi Rokkit and Skorcha, Waaaagh! Banner, Painboy, Grot Orderly, Cybork Body, Bosspole)
(Trukk, Red, Armor Plates, Ram) 435 pts.

1 HQ each ran with the Nobz in the trukks.

I had only played against SM, IG and Eldar prior to this with my orks, and knew that my big weakness would be my unfamiliarity with a lot of Codex rules.

Round 1

Fought against a Chaos Space Marines force. His list consisted of specialist marines for shooting, raptors, some regular marines, termies and obliterators, two(?) daemon HQ units, a Vindicator and some monster with rage. He was a young player, and I am guessing he had not played orks before.

Set-up:

He placed his two objectives on the opposite corners of his side, I deployed mine as close as I could within a trenchline with my lootas.

He placed a standard line with a greater daemon and the Vindicator on my right. I deployed mostly on my left and held a boyz mob, kommando's and the deffkoptas in reserve.

Turn 1:

His daemon prince and the vindicator surged forward, firing at the lootas but only killing the mek. On my left, the other daemon moved forward along with the rage unit. He threw up his long range shots at my trukks, but the kff deflected the shots.

On my turn, my trukks moved forward and grazzie and the nobz engaged his HQ. I love letting people advance against my ork; I can get stuck in and wail on them first turn. I positioned them so no pk and few attacks would be made against it in my assault phase. I didn't kill it, which mean I don't need to fear them getting shot up by all of those plasma weapons he had next turn (and the noise marines to my left). Lootas put a wound on the Daemon coming towards them. Everyone else moved foreward.

Turn 2:

Rage thingy engaged the assault and both the daemon and it were obliterated when the full force of my nobz and graz hit them. 2 Nobz took a wound. Raptors deep struck next to the 'ard boyz and only killed one while shooting. Greater daemon moved forward and used his lash to move my lootas all over the place, assaulted them, and easily dispatched them. Trukk full of other nobz were destroyed and crashed next to a rhino. His cc units positioned themselves to charge the grazzie nobz.

My boyz came in from reserve, and I called a Waaaahg! this turn so my 'ard boyz, regular boyz and nobz could get into a good position. Graz and nobz chaged a unit of terminators, with him in the front, killing 3 of the 5 (He made a lot of his invulnerable saves), while I lost a nob. Other nobz charged noise marines and the CSM that came out of the rhino. Destroyed the CSM and left 2 noise marines alive (yay!). Boyz carefully charged the daemon so that only 7 boyz would get their attacks in. Of course, it lives, so the rest pile in and my boyz are safe from the Vindicator for a turn. 'ard boyz destroy the Raptors.

Turn 3:

He is now at a loss at what to do. He sends out some shots, but doesn't do any real damaged. Graz gets charged by the obliterators, I lose two nobz but kill the rest of the termies and some obliterators. Other nob squad kills the rest of the noise maries, and the boyz kill the daemon and consolidate towards the objectives.

Now at this point it is mop-up. 'ard boyz move towards one objective, other boyz mob moves onto the other 2 objectives in my deployment zone, and nobz just start krumping things for fun. Deff Dread does what it did the whole game: stand in the middle of the map and wait till something comes twoards the center of the board, but nothing did.

The game was called at this point. I had 3 objectives, he had one, and he had scored 2 kill points (lootas and a trukk) while I had scored at least 6. Massacre +2.

Round 2

Played Scenario 3 against a Necron Player. It was spearhead deployment, and I positioned my trukks to the upper left corner of my map. My 'ard boyz were ready to go twoards the objective near his edge, the loota's sat in a building, and the boyz mob, the dread, koptas and kommandos were in reserve.

He had two monoliths, 2 warriors squads, parhias, immortals, 2 tomb spyders, a lord with an orb, a Nightbringer, and 2 units of destroyers.

Turn 1:

I went first, and the big mek trukk streamed towards his line while the other trukk (with the count as troops nobz) headed towards the other. 'ard boyz moved towards the center of the map. I decided to go big, and hit up a monolith with a pk while it was easy to hit. Big Mek nobz hit up that and the Nightbringer. Big mistake. I did not know the crazy fear abilities of the C'tan and the nearby parhias and lord. They made their charge, but their fate was sealed. Stunned the monolith and got a wound on the C'tan (it made a crazy amount of saves). 4 wounds were placed on the nobz, and I made my leadership check.

His turn hurt. A lot. Trukk was shot out and grazzie and the nobz piled out. Necron lord then pinned them. Other nobz lost the combat and started to run away. The Destroyers then moved up and fired at the 'ard boyz, taking out a lot of them. tomb spyders moved towards the objective on my side.

Turn 2:
Grazzie and his nobz fail some type of moral check, and start to retreat. The dread and the boyz mob come in from reserve and brace for the monolith heading towards my objective. Lootas start putting wounds on the C'tan. 'ard boyz charge the destroyers, killing them.

On his turn, he decided to start to be bold. Warriors came in from reserve and moved in on his objective. Lootas survive a round of shooting, losing 2. The C'tan chases my nobz. The 'ard Boyz get shot up and charged by the Immortals. The monoliths move closer towards my objective. I am cursing the "we'll be back" rule. A tomb spyder charges my dread, taking out a dccw.

Turn 3:

My nobz just keep on running back. Deffkoptas come on the board and fry a tomb spyder. Ork mob and dread destroy the other one, loosing another dccw, and starts to move to engage the monolith to keep it from pushing my boys around. Lootas fire at the C'tan, but do nothing. 'ard boyz and immortals keep in combat.

He retaliates by shooting up my nobz, dropping the big mek nobz below half strengh so the cannot regroup. Deffkoptas get shot at, but one with a buzzsaw lives and makes it's check. Lootas survive another round of shooting. C'tan chases my nobz.

Turn 4:

I am starting to fret a little. Nobz keep on falling back, and the big mek nobz flee off the board. Lootas put another wound on the C'tan. My faith is restored, however, when my boyz and the deff dread stream towards the monolith and actually take it out. 'ard boyz continue their wiring melee with the immortas. My Kommandos also came on and knocked out some destroyers on the edge of the board.

He was sick of my lootas, so he focused a lot of his fire on them and took them out. The lone deffkopta was also shot out. The monolith fires on the boyz, but do little damage. His other warriors also came on the board and fired at my kommandos, killing only 3. 'ard boyz and the immortals now only have a handful of them left, but are still in it.

Turn 5:
Grazzie and his nobz finally have a chance to pass their check. The Waaaagh!, charge the C'tan, and kill it before it can reach my boyz. Kommandos and the dread charge the other monolith, immobilizing it. The boyz try to consolidate on the objective, but I rolled a 2 for my difficult terrain test and a 1 for my run so there is a little top of a nearby building that I cannot put a boy on.

Now it's all down to the objective that my boyz are sitting on. He shoots up Grazzies unit, killing him (but a painboy lives, passes the check, and runs for cover!) the monolith is immobilized, and cannot push my boyz. He tries to turbo boost some destroyers but cannot get within range of the objective because of the boyz.

We both hold an objective, and he got more kill points, so I had a minor loss. Right after it is called, he realized that he could of sent the destroyers through the monolith and put them on top of the building that I could not cover. Overall, a really fun game against a really good player. He went on to take first.

Round 3

At this point, it is getting late in the day. I had work at 9 that night, and was the driver for another player that I brought. Some players car got towed and the owner of the shop was busy dealing with it, so it took forever to set up the last round. Because we had to leave together, my friend and I asked if we could play against each other. We did, and quickly set up, but only got one round in. He was able to come at the last minute, and I made him an army out of his and my space marines. It was dow set-up with night fighting the first round.

I set up first, and put a trukk with Graz, nobz and a trukk in the middle of the map. He placed Cato, a tac squad and a scout squad on his back edge. To my dismay, he stole the initiate. The force he had was very tank heavy, so tones of tanks showed up his first turn.

I was really really really lucky his first shooting phase. No tank was able to see it, so no searchlight hit it up. Then, the scout squad (with Telion in it) stepped up to the plate. The sniper rifles harmlessly bounced off of the trukk, but he nominated his missile launcher to fire with a BS of 6. It then proceeded to miss. Graz produced a grin.

My trukk streamed foreward, the nobz piled out, I charged both the snipers and the tac squad, wiping them off the board (well the scouts ran off, watching their revered captain and 10 battle brothers bite it was not even a sight Telion could endure), and Graz personally dispatched Cato. I had to run off to work after this, so we called the game. I got 7 kill points, scoring a major victory, and was sure that I would get more if the game went any longer.

Overall, I took 3rd place. It was fun playing against new armies, and I have a pretty new mega nob. Next up is Village Games in Anoka.

Nice report. I palyed D & D and Battletech which became boring after a decade each.

(Necron player from round 2)It indeed was an awesome game! An epic slugfest. Honestly, I got a bit lucky in that the immortals lasted as long as they did. For being new to the game, you certainly play very well, and know your stuff. I also enjoyed how you saved my butt in that apocalypse on saturday. I wish you luck in Anoka (and I hope that we don't play each other again so that we both may advance to chi-town). Keep on trukking!

Check out my project, 41.0, which aims to completely rewrite 40k!
