Purchased Rogue Trader & Vehicle Manual c.1993. Read, but never modeled/played.
10 years pass.
Purchased 4th Edition Rulebook, Codex Orks & 2004 Chapter Approved. Read, but never modeled/played.
5 years pass.
Today.

As you can surmise my interest in the hobby has ebbed and flowed over the years. It is currently flowing. Thinking of picking up the 5th edition Rulebook, some modeling supplies & SM models. Maybe put together a 500 pt army.

Seriously intimidated by lack of painting skills.

Question: What is the typical age of 40k players? I know persons of all ages play, but there appear to be many references to 'kids' on fa/tg/uys. I don't want to show up to the local game store and be the only person over the age of 30 (except the owner).

Question: If I do put together a modeling/painting area - how do I keep my cat from jumping onto it?

Welcome to Dakka.Don't be scared of lack of painting skills,if you need any help just post a thread in painting and modelling section. Also GW's site does have a few good painting guides.

As for the general age of gamers,I cannot say for certain. So I will rather leave that for someone else to answer.

It depends on the hobby shop you go to just check out the store on a game night and see who shows up to play. Welcome to dak dak.

*lol at middle aged mans discomfort*
Don't mind him, he's from Canada. Every now and then a strong wind from the south will send the cheesyness of the USA sweeping up into the populace of Canada, corrupting and infecting them until they too have a desire to imitate elephants with bazookas and talk like rappers.

Hi, welcome to Dakka! My suggestion to you would be to play in a non GW hobby store. In my experience the only people who play at GW stores are junior highers who haven't learned, or don't care, how to control BO....

The GW store near me closed down a year or two ago - so no worries on that front.

Don't forget the workers asking what your looking and spend ten minutes talking about products you have no intention to buy.

They shall be my finest warriors, these men who give of themselves to me. Like clay I shall mould them, and in the furnace of war forge them. They will be of iron will and steely muscle. In great armour shall I clad them and with the mightiest guns will they be armed. They will be untouched by plague or disease, no sickness will blight them. They will have tactics, strategies and machines so that no foe can best them in battle. They are my bulwark against the Terror. They are the Defenders of Humanity. They are my Space Marines and they shall know no fear.
