So, I want to kit-bash a Fighta Bomma by using tons of plasticard and an old model plane. The question is, which plane should I use, and what scale should I look for?

Some people play to win, some people play for fun. Me? I play to kill toy soldiers.

Not sure on the scale, but I'd start with a Soviet plane. Something like a Tupolev Tu-2

Probably somewhere I shouldn't be

It's tough to say, Normally it's 1/56 thats roughly in scale with 28mm, but that's too small for what you want - the next most common scale is 1/48 but that might look too large. But it might be a good place to start, though you have to remember that it will probably be too long and with too wide a wingspan for practical gaming purposes, so it will need to be cut down. Go to your nearest hobby shop that specialises in military models - they will probably have some display models there - bring an ork and ask the guys if you can compare the two.

I once saw an Ork Fighta made out of an F-4 phantom model. IDK what the scale is tho :(

When buying trees and the sort I try to keep in mind that your typical model is about 1 inch tall and the small bases are some 1/2 inch around. I've had some success buying woodland scenic trees with that in mind.

good luck tho! And let me know what you come up with. I would love to take a crack at it as well.

Generally 1/48 scale is used for aircraft models.
1/32 (the next largest) is way too large for tabletop (an F-4E in 1/32 is around 22" long from memory).

1/48 scale WW2 prop-driven aircraft are prime for ork fighta bomma converting. I've seen bf-109s, kittyhawks, spitfires and hurricanes all done up as ork fightas.

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).
Old enough to know better, young enough to not give a ****.

If you're doing Orks, though, it's always better to go with a TAD larger in scale than smaller. Like the Chromester said, 1/34 will be too big, but 1/48 should fit well. Of course, that could change depending on the plane you go with.

Personally, if I were to ever kit-bash a plane for an Ork flyer, I would use the MiG-15 or the F-86 Sabre from the Korean War era skies. I would probably choose the MiG over the Sabre (even though the Sabre was CLEARLY the better aircraft) because it just screams, "WAAAGGGH!!!!" more than the Sabre.

MiG-15:

Short, stocky, and a blunt nose.

This pic even has some nice weathering suggestions:

F-86 Sabre:

Even though both fighters would make a good Ork fighter in my book, my conversion money would go on the MiG-15, hands down. The nose tapers less than the F-86 and the nose opening is larger. The biggest selling point for me though is the stunted length of the fuselage and, most of all, the huge tail. Ripe for Orkifying.

Good call Ghidorah. The MiG-15 was definitely designed to be an ork plane

That is what I am doing right now. I am finishing up the painting on my looted valkyre and I will post it so you can see that idea. The only issue was the crew in the cockpit. I used old school ork drivers from the old trukk and buggy. They fit great and with the cockpit screen on you can hardly tell they are old school orks.

I would suggest checking out http://www.the-waaagh.com/forums/ for some inspiration. You will find a ton of converted bomma and fighta bommas and so forth (check out the workshop section and the trophy rack section)

You will find stuff like this:
