Pirates are hard to understand, here's how I remember them.

Basically, they are a bunch of solos who buff the infantry.

The troll makes them not fall down or get stuck, and shoots the explody harpoon (easy to remember since he's holding it up).

The chick makes them hit harder and more often, and she's a ninja chick. (She's like combo Eyriss/Piper, but no shooting)

The little dude makes them not break, and buffs their shooting.

The big cannon is a big cannon, it can either do a big shot or an AOE.

Ayanna and Holt are invisible unless Ayanna does something. Holt shoots, and he shoots much harder if you are fighting his girl. The things she does are stop all casting nearby and curse a unit to take more damage. If she does either of these things she isn't invisible so you should kill her.

The Doc makes them make their tough checks better.

Somehow they get tough, its either the troll, the dwarf or the doc, can't remember which.

The Buccanneer can't fight well, but throws nets on your heavies, which is like knockdown.

The Booter is a wrestling jack.

The Mariner is a shooty jack with the a spinny anchor.

Shae's is a midrange caster, not a support caster or a frontline one, but in between. His big gimmick is the preposterous threat range he can give a unit with Coup De Main and Godspeed (his feat).

Hope that helps.

Short version: Solos buff the unit(s). Kill the solos and the unit is just merc infantry.

All in all, fact is that Warhammer 40K has never been as balanced as it is now, and codex releases have never been as interesting as they are now (new units and vehicles and tons of new special rules/strategies each release -- not just the same old crap with a few changes in statlines and points costs).
