Subject: Returning to 40k, I Have not played since 3rd edition. Now which army to pick?

First off, hello everybody.
This is my intro post. I played 3rd edition BA and nids back in the day. I'm looking to start a new army in fifth edition. I've decided to play a xenos or warp-based army, having had my fill of MEQ. My priorities this time around are more focused on modeling and painting, with playing an uber competitive army a distant second.
I'm really on the fence here.
Dark Eldar appeal to me. I really like their speed and hitting power, despite how they don't get all hung up on details like 'armor,' or 'toughness.' =)
The only thing holding me back is fear of lack of support down the road. If DE is getting an overhaul in a year or three, is there really any point in slapping on paint now? If DE are going to be merged with Eldar or dropped, the concern is the same.
Orks, in contrast, have lots of toughness and armor. The models are cool looking, especially the Forgeworld ones. They are a mature race, and probably a blast to model and play. Less exciting to me, but there is no uncertainty about their future.
I really like Chaos daemons as well. Speed, power and awesome looking models.
While I start reading codices, do you out there on the tubes have anything to add that might help me make up my mind?
Comments are welcome and encouraged.

Go for BA. You know you want to...
But if not, go for DE.
(Anyfinks better than orksies or slaneesh)
Honestly, I don't think they'll change the basic eldar troops and raiders, but probably the wyches and characters. So avoid those if possible.

DE is difficult to play at the competitive level and they will hardly get a new codex in the near future.
I'd start with a more forgiving army.
As Emp. Faithful, I'd start with BA.
After some games, you can ask yourself again.

Welcome,if you like dark eldar go for it.Perhaps if you play with the codex now,if it gets updated later you will be more certain of how to use them.Yet I would say for a man coming back to the hobby perhaps start with an easier race to play.I like Daemonhunters or marines for this, but go with what you like.I would say read up on the different races fluff(Lexicanum is a nice place to look, http://www.lexicanum.com/ ),if the fluff grabs your attention go for that race.

...Shhhh, Deff Dred! They're not supposed to know that...yet.
Hang on. How funny would it be that after years of fail, Abbadon or some such FINNALY gets to attack Terra, after much fighting rips his way through the custodians and defenses and marches right up to the throne. A big blanket covers the throne, Abbadon rips it off to find a dummy. With a big note on the forehead saying 'FAIL. Guess who?'
And at that moment, the Emprah and primarchs outflank Abbadon. His liast reported words are 'CREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEED!!!'

As was said, Welcome to Dakka.
For your preferences, I would suggest Eldar or Orks.
Eldar are shooty. And you can be pretty detail oriented with the painting to make them the best looking at your local gaming establishment.
Orks are just too much fun not to do. I play Marines, but am wanting to start an Ork army. You can still be uber paint job oriented, even more so since you have to adhere to details from half a dozen armies (Orks are scavengers, remember). Plus, the rules for Orks are so crazy that a fun time is all but assured (red paint, ramshackle, etc).
Hope this helps.

Orks are great and all on the painting and modeling aspect but everyone plays them or at least in emp. faithfuls case he has a small army in his closet that he never lets anyone see.

I would say BA or Eldar. Eldar can painted very nicely with a lot of color and detail. Check out the gallery.

Eldar can be painted beautifully, but they don't really hold a lot of modelling opportunity. To my mind, what really looks like it would provide both would be an Imperial Guard regiment painted and modeled as renegade (see the works of LBursley and infilTRAITOR on this site), or orks for insane conversions (see the works of jamsessionein or lemmingspawn on this site or the works of Kr00za on thewaaagh.com these armies are really open to personalisation.
Cheers

Thanks for all the replies.
I should have mentioned that I threw out my old armies and can not bring them back. Thats right, I threw them out. Didn't even sell them on eBay. A painfully stupid move. So I'm starting from scratch. Gonna go with DE, I think.
