Is it common for marines to show squad number or company numper through heraldry or armor colors I know for a fact that Ultramarines do it but any others?

A god source for most codex chapters would be : Insignium astartes ( not sure if available ).

The way of most chapters is:

-use shoulderpad rims in different colors for company
-use knee pad in different colors for squad
-use helmet in different colors for rank or unit type
-use numbers on shoulderpads or knee pads for squad

Methods may vary. See the "legion" ( chapter ) specific codices. => BA, DA, SW

Notice that black templars didnt use any squad/company markings, but may field personal heraldry on their characters.

Another good way is to check out hereldry symbol books which can be aplied to banners,combat shields and other ornemental themes.Also How to paint space marines is a prety good book.
