Hey all,
Im completely new to Warhammer 40k table tops, basically my only experience is books and the Dawn of War games. Im indulging my self in the table top version to see if it catches my liking, If so you should be seeing me here more often.
Any way hello all and any advice on getting into The table top (
i.e.
1)What rule book to read first?
2)How to start your first army?
3)Advice on choosing a army?(Are there playing styles similar to the RTS Dawn of War?)

Welcome to Dakka! 1. Read the 5th edition rulebook, basically the only one they sell. 2. Play what you like...ahem Imperium 3. You can paint your guys any way you like, but you should play the Imperium. IG and SM both got a recent update and are doing VERY well. And if you play a Loyalist army you will be spared a nasty surprise from Emperor's Faithful and his loyal inquisition. I hear that this weeks surprise is sitting down and watching him and his entourage pantomime every page from War and Peace....truly horrifying...

Well, you will need the 5th edition rulebook of course. As to how to start and army and which to start, read up on GW's site,if a races fluff(backround) captures your imagination go with it,here's a link:
http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/home.jsp
As for starting an army,go with AOBR to start, gives you some minis, the rulebook and perhaps you could go from there. If you don't like that idea a battle force would be best I think.
Well welcome to Dakka!

Thank you for the speedily reply.
I will check out the 5th edition rulebook as soon as i find a copy.
Alot of people have recommend Space Marines, but my heart lies with the Tau. Ive just been fascinated by there tactics and reading up on there lore i really admire their morals and social structure, I use to play Tau online in Dawn of War
Which brings me to my alternate question: Are the tactics from the RTS game similar to the armies of the table top? Cause if the Tau tactics and strategy is not similar then ill probably go with SM.

Hahaha not quite sure what you mean by shooty..
But basically i found Tau on DoW to be hit and run tactics until you get tier 2 where you can start pushing with mobile turrets to prevent flanking and allow a mobile platform for retreat making the Tau front line very hard to push back.
But i suppose Table Top and RTS are to different playing style not sure if you can even compare the two?

The thing with Tau in the table top game is they are very different than in the RTS. The Tau don't have a very high toughness or BS and they are much harder to play in the table top. I have seen Tau get wiped off the table in just a few turns by IG, all because the player didn't understand how to play as them. My suggestion would be to go with SM as they are the easiest, not to mention most LOYAL, to start with. Their fluid style and adaptability is very useful and makes it much easier to start out. PM me if you have any questions on SM stuff and for suggestions.

This is a very smart idea. The first thing you need to do is to get your hands on a rule book, and honestly just read the whole thing through. It doesn't have to be thorough, but just so you have a general understanding of how the game works. After that, you should browse the the available armies. If asethetics are important to you, pick a few that you think look the coolest. Read through their codices (don't have to buy 'em, just read through them in a store or online somehow).
After haven't read through the rulebook, the real differences in how the armies function should make sense to you.
I'd suggest going from there.
I personally would NOT suggest going with space marines. They are very much the cookie-cutter army, and definitely the most played. This may not matter to you though...

Thank you medd some really good advice.
Ill definitely take it.. ill go to a few games see whats happening then start reading a few codex and figuring out what each army does before making my choice.
I think if i had to go SM ill probably collect grey knights loved the novels and GK in the Dawn of War game are just to awesome.
