Hello all!

Tried out a retribution vs. Khador battle box last night.

Kaelyssa + Hydra + Phoenix vs Sorcha + Juggernaut + Destroyer

Now before I get going here, I'll freely admit we were screwing around - neither of us had played any MkII, so we were seeing what our stuff could do.

He won the toss, and allocated one focus to each 'Jack and advanced with Sorcha. He cast Fog of War and took cover behind a building. He ran both of his 'jacks up.

I allocated 3 focus to the Hydra and one to the Phoenix, ran the Phoenix up, advanced with Kael and cast Arkantrik Bolt hitting the Juggernaut. Boosted damage and immobilized it. I then advanced with the Hydra, fired a shot and found out I was just short on range.

He cleared the stationary, advanced both of his jacks a little, fired at the Phoenix, hitting and did 6 damage to its field. He then re-cast Fog of War and passed the turn.

I decided that I wanted to see what the Phoenix could do, so I allocated two focus to it (a mistake, in hindsight). I saved most of my focus so that I could make both of his 'jacks stationary. I hit both, and successfully made both stationary with Arkantrik bolt. I then fired the Hydra's shot at the Juggernaut, boosted and did a fair bit of damage. I then charged his 'naut with the Phoenix. While the Phoenix did a fair bit of damage (it had 4 boxes left when I was done), I should have allocated an additional focus to the Phoenix for an extra attack, and I should have advanced into melee rather than charge. The 'naut had not been successfully destroyed.

On his turn he allocated 3 focus to each of his guys and de-stationaried them. The fire still burned (we forgot about it for the rest of the game) but did no damage to the 'naut. He then popped his feat and destroyed the Phoenix.

On my turn I topped up the focus on the hydra, re-mobilized it, cleared stationary from Kael, and hit both of his jacks with the bolt. I successfully made the Destroyer stationary but rolled poorly on the juggernaut so it was still active. I backed up with my warcaster and the Hydra, fired a shot finishing off the Juggernaut.

He left the Destroyer stationary and windrushed Sorcha up to Kael and took several swings. Kael survived, taking 7 damage.

On my turn I allocated a focus to the Hydra and went to town on Socha. The Hydra missed with both of its attacks, and out of the three attacks I took with Kael (boosting hit on all the attacks from the Hydra) I only hit once. I boosted damage, but it wasn't enough. Sorcha quickly finished off Kael on his turn.

On the whole, an interesting first foray into both Warmachine (first game since prime ORIGINALLY came out) and into Mk II as well. Both of us could have played a lot differently with a lot more success - but we were both still getting a feel of how our 'jacks and casters worked. I *know* that the Phoenix could have destroyed the Juggernaut had I allocated focus correctly and simply advanced into Melee range rather than charging. Had that happened, the Phoenix would have easily survived the counter assault - what shape it would have been in I have no idea, but it certainly wouldn't have been a pile of wreckage. I also should have been more aggressive with the Hydra, as holding it back as a ranged support unit was a glaring error on my part.

Toe-to-toe, Kael is a weak caster when confronted with someone as in-your-face as pSorcha. With her melee skill of 6 she is better off staying well away and using spells and ranged attacks to weaken her opponent. I know how I would have played it differently, and I'm looking forward to a rematch.

In terms of 'jacks, I was really impressed with the resilience of the Phoenix. Because the initial shot only did 6 damage, the Phoenix's field fully repaired it on my turn. Between that and the ability to spend focus to 'regenerate' the field makes the Myrmidon's remarkably resilient despite their apparent lack of hulls, and it means that your opponent really has to desire their destruction if they are to be killed. The other two retribution 'jacks aren't as resilient, but their latent abilities are still adequate to keep them going for longer than it would normally appear.

This might not be THE place to put this, but I think the 'Shake Effect' rule is the biggest change coming out with MKII. (Aside from the Army Build Mechanic, of course)
