well seeming the ordo xenos study them alot IF and this is fact, IF all the tyranids hivefleets join together they would apsolutely R4P3 the imperium or do some hard as damage, but then again they say the same thing about orks :S

No one, as soon as the Tyranids are nearly dead a couple of new hive will appear. That way the story doesn't move forward too much
Remember what happens when the story moves forward, especially when Tyranids are involved.
Seriously though, Tyranids have a large advantage. Imperial Guard usually struggles with them and it usually takes a lot out of any helping Space Marine Chapters to fight them. There can also be countless other hives floating just outside the galaxy. But, the story is made to make Humanity seem broken into fragments spread accross the galaxy and struggling to survive.
Usually in who would win fights it comes down to a fight between Necrons and Tyranids.

ahh but has anyone else heard that terrifyingly cool rumour that......the tyranids are running from something?
what would force a race that interchangable to flee?
back on topic, or a more in topic rumour, what if the fleets seen so far are just the pilot fish?
swimming near something huge? like A GIANT tyranid fleet?
i mean ive always thought a massive galaxy spanning fleet of nids would be awsome! cos everyrace would have to ally together tohave a chance of survival! i mean imperium on its own would eventually screw up.

I have heard that a little, but I personally saw them more of a Zergie Yuuzhan Vong. The YV were an extra-galactic race in Star Wars that entered the galaxy with the sole intent of domination due to a "higher knowledge", in this case religion.
Tyranids I see as coming to this galaxy because they have consumed all of the biomass, or all significant biomass, and have just moved on. Of course, I'd love to one day hear about the Necrons completely stomping the Tyranids into the ground, considering how anti-psyker they are.

Nids (not that i'm biased.)
If they can survive the length of time spent in intergalactic space to get here, they can sit by while humans self distruct or turn to chaos or burn all their weapons and come back with a nail in a board and eat whatever's left

what is this rumour that i hear spoken of?
anything that makes nids run doesnt bode well.
in answering the question though i think the imperium would put up a good fight but ultimately would not be able to match the nids ability to effectivly create entire new organisms with new abilities. the imperium is too set in its ways, and as long as they are busy killing each other they dont stand a chance.
sorry to say but true

Tyranids
the imperial guard are just... disgraceful
and the space marines probably wouldn't notice because they're too busy somewhere else fighting someone else
and they're not really human anyway, so they can't join in

Imagine this.... Humanity Undevided... If chaos, imperium and the random enclaves join together to fight all the greater threats we would be unstoppable. After all, what is a little theological debate against absolutely everything elese in the freaking galaxy trying to wipe humankind off the face of the universe?
Barring that, humanity has numbers (currently) and plot armour in the form of Big E and I think the ordo xenos may pull something out of nowhere. If the 'nids win, the dark gods have to make do with chaos tyranids, an unlikely prospect. Isn't chaos universal? Do the gods have worshippers in oter galaxies? If an entire race of perfect followers is in jeopordy would or could they send for outside reenforcements? This would drive the tyranids back to more managable (but playable) levels and add a new race!

Tyranids have the following advantage that humanity cannot overcome:
Ever time a person dies, the Tyranids grow stronger with more biomass.
Every time a Tyranid dies, it is simply "recycled" creating significantly less loss. I'm also willing to bet Tyranids can be spawned and ready to fight a LOT faster than a person can.

One guy designs a backfeeding psychic virus that disrupts the hive mind connection.
Just one.
Noone gets that if you kill a general or a waaaghboss or an Autarch, someone takes their place and the army picks it's self back up, if someone finds a way to break down the psychic link of the hivemind...that's it for the tyranids. It's a brilliant design but once the flaw in it is found, game over for the bugs.
Basically bring chaos to their order...

It really depends if you mena nids vs man or nids vs the imperium.
If its just tyranids vs loyalist humans the nids would win unless the humans make huge changes to their tactics and weapons. One chance they would have is if the Ordo Xenos managed to make better specialist anti tyranid weapons. At current fighting Nids with IG is just feeding them. The only way IG would be of any use against tyranids is if they copied tau tactics and used hit and run. The IG's attrition war tactics will not work on nids as every time they win a battle they regain full strength. The only other chance would be a massed SM attack on the hivemind. It may destroy all the space marines but with they hive mind gone it wouldn't be too hard to finish off the tyranids.
If by "mankind" you were including chaos then it could be very different. I would guess that the Nids aren't too popular with chaos as they are eating all the gods food, and stopping the chaos marines getting their revenge, so as soon as the tyranids become a threat to humanity I think chaos would start helping the Empire of man. Not directly of course but they would probably be the thing that changes the ballance. Althought the chaos humans won't do that much damage to the tyranids, daemons are the worst thing that the tyranid could face. If they summon daemons onto the planet the tyranids are eating or onto a nid ship its a very bad situtation for them. Daemons can beat the nids at CC and have no biomass at all. So all damage done to the tyranids is a loss of biomass or energy.

Heh. The Ordo Xenos seems well on the way to developing weaponry to deal with them. With a virus or toxin keyed to Tyranid DNA or with sufficient psychic capability to disrupt the hivemind they would be helpless.

QFT (I missed this post in my last comment)
The tyranids are a glass cannon race, if you fight on their terms (their basic soldiers) you will never defeat them. However one powerful attack on the hivemind and its over. The thing is tyranids are claimed to be the perfect army but the one thing that lack is single thought and the hivemind will never give them free thought as thats what keeps them working.
