I'm starting a Dwarves w/ Forgotten Allies army, and have gotten great advice on other sites. This one has a pretty active WoTR levelof support, so I'm posting this question here as well.

I love the Hobbit archer models, and they do shoot pretty well, giving lots of bonus dice. But their defence is so low compared to Dwarf Archers, that I worry they may not be worth the low point cost.

Also, they are metal, and thus expensive.$

We are starting at only a 1,000 points. I will gladly paint up two boxes (I company, 8 figs) of Hobbits if their small amount of bow fire will amount to something, even for a round or two. If they positively aren't worth it, or if I should wait until I can make two companies, I will heed your advice.

Thanks.

Single-company formations are rarely worth it unless they (preferably a combination of):
1) Have Indomitable.
2) Some form of shooting negation (Enchanted Cloaks, no shooting outside short range, etc)
3) High resilience / defense

I could see a use in Hobbit Archers: They have a higher number of bonus shots, are cheaper by over 50%, are still "Common" formations, use regular instead of short bows, etc. However, a single base of D2 models is asking for something to take them out before they can do anything.

If you do use Hobbit archers, I'd suggest at least two bases - preferably three. Since that might be a bit expensive and a waste of funds, I'd say stick with regular dwarven bowmen / dwarven war machines instead.
