Apologies if already flagged up, but from this months White Dwarf (UK issue 360)....

White Dwarf wrote:This year, Fantasy Flight Games will be releasing the 3rd Edition of Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay. Bringing the mechanics of the roleplaying experience closer than the previous expansions were able to explore, WFRP features unparalleled storytelling options in the Warhammer world.

The massive Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay box set features foure books, 36 custom dice, hundreds of cards, counts, character sheets - in fact, everything a Games Maser and a party of adventurers needs to begin their trek through the Old World!

Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay is available from Hobby Game Shops and online. More information can be found at: www.fantasyflightgames.com/wfrp

Looking at the piccie, 3 of the books are...Rulebook, Tome of Mystics, Tome of Adventurers. Fourth books title is hidden behind another book.

There was a thread about this some time ago and it's not looking like an rp game.
It's a great shame FFG didn't maintain the format used in DH.

Not for me I'm afraid.

It could be that the field of fantasy RPGs is much more competitive than the niche Dark Heresy and Rogue Trader are in. Or they honestly believe the key to success is innovation instead of stagnation. Who knows?

Seems the cards are more 'cheat sheets' to save you having to look stuff up.

As soon as I saw notes on wading through lesser enemies to get to the Boss enemy, I filed this one under, no thanks.

I play MMO's on a PC thanks, no need for a tabletop version.

There are several excellent reasons to hate this game, but this is an inane one. Possibly the most inane possible one, even, so congratulations, friend!

Indeed, D&D made wading through lesser enemies on the way to a boss, like it or not this is tabletop roleplaying and always has been.

Any Roleplaying game is only as good as it's Storyteller, and a Storyteller only as good as his Troupe.

Beyond that, the background will sell a decent RPG, as it's the only reason to play. If you don't like it or don't get it, you won't enjoy any game set in it.

Actually I was referring to what I believe I saw was a standard roll, as in you are facing eight little baddies roll a dice and oh yes you killed them all. Put me right off, if I did indeed read it correctly.

So aye thats what I didn't like, and oh yes there are certainly many more reasons to dislike this game, that was just my worst of the bunch.

I think 2009 is going to go down as "WTF are they thinking" in the gaming industry.

First we have D&D 4ed...now WFRP 3ed. Both products deserve the big "WTF were you thinking" award.

And DnD4E was the first to try to be an MMO dressed up as an RPG. Reading the rulebooks to that, and how combat works, is like playing an MMO.

That's not what I want in an RPG (been playing RPGs since around 1981), and was cool with the changes up until 3rd ed DnD.

This move by FFG with WFRP is to try to grab some of that online MMO crowd by making the game 'mirror' the online experience (the same as DnD did last year). Some might like it, I certainly don't, and haven't bought a single piece of 4th eds rules (and I'm a rules whore).

I shall sum up my views on this is 2 simple steps:

WFRP 3rd Ed: Feth that i'm still playing 1st edition.

DnD 4th Ed: Feth that i'm still playing 3.5

One thing that does look interesting is some 'party level' rules... instead of the players being a party that does stuff, it looks like there's some options for the party type that give some mechanical effects. So a 'ragtag do-gooder adventurer' party would have some different bonuses from the 'hardcore mercenaries' that would be different from the 'faith-based heroes' or something like that.

Similar to D&D 4e, both seem like interesting game engines that needed a 'name' to get made and on shelves (I.E. launching Yet Another Fantasy RPG is going to be a hard sell in the current market, but D&D and WHFRP have some name recognition). The negative side of this is that they are being judged on it for being different no matter if it's a good game or not.

Working on someting you'll either love or hate. Hopefully to be revealed by November.
Play the games that make you happy.

Custom dice = gak, IMO.

What's wrong with the standard selection of D3, DA, D4 etc that are easily and cheaply available?

Oh! That's right! They are easily and cheaply available, so they won't work for a money-gouging system.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

My FLGS ran a demo of this last week. This game is very fun. I thought it was going to be a pretty rough learning curve with all the cards and dice and what not, but it isn't. It's really pretty smooth. The combat system is enjoyable and I thought they way magic is done really stays with the Warhammer style. I understand that the game is a big investment, but honestly it's cheaper than buying all the D&D books and it's of FFG quality. Serously, if you get a chance you should really try this game.

Yes, but how does it compare to the old game? From the looks of things, it is completely different.

I've tried it and I like it. It's different than the older versions but there's an elegance to the system that makes a lot of sense.

The dice work and do more than just roll a d20, handful of d10s, or whatever and add modifiers to determine success. It's a much more fluid system that works very well. Instead of getting a penalty for a roll, due to environmental conditions for instance, you add a misfortune dice that might affect your overall roll or add a different effect altogether.

It's very much an RPG and works very well. The game is still run by a GM who explains the settings and sets up the story. Resolution of actions is different and interesting.

I'm glad they decided to do something interesting with the setting. They very easily could have just done WFRP as the 2nd edition game with some updates. I'm glad they're doing some different and new and I think it works.

Folks here on Dakka are never happy, though. Had they made the new version an updated version of the 2nd edition people would have complained that they didn't use the opportunity to do anything new. I sometimes wonder why people are even interested in these various hobbies when all some do is complain about every single aspect of the hobby while demonstrating their own ignorance and prejudices in the process.

To be fair, people aren't happy with it everywhere, Warseer, RPG net to name a couple and most telling, even on FFG's own forums.. so this is not really a fair comment on folks thoughts based just because they are on Dakka.

I played a pre-launch demo game last week.

I really really enjoyed it.

Building a dice pool for actions is fast and intuitive. Much faster than totaling up your bonuses is in most RPGs.

The action cards are handy reminders. They keep game play focused, and fast. This is a nice change from sifting through stacks of rulebooks for addenda.

The party style mechanic is neat, and provides extra fiddly bits for the GM to leverage to help parties stay cohesive.

The fine-tuning of the wound and critical hit system is excellent. Combat is still just as dangerous, and you don't have to wait until you're out of hit points to start seeing gruesome wounds.

Overall, I think the new system is fantastic and for me, is a really welcome update to WHFRP.

I would love to try this without making the $100 investment for all the books and such. Sounds very interesting, but I don't know if anyone around here will get it.

4th Edition of D&D is not a horrible game at all and many people enjoy it so if we can keep to talking about 3rd edition WFRP and not about slamming other games that would be great. If someone came into a 40k thread and started railing about how terrible WFB was that would not be looked kindly on so if we can apply that some principle here I think we can avoid derailment.

3rd Edition could be interesting but that price point is going to kill them. Even if it doesn't work out the older books aren't going to disintegrate just because a new edition comes out. It will be interesting to see if this gamble pays off for Fantasy Flight.

Indeed.

FFG just announced that they are no longer supporting WFRP 2nd Edition and will be deleting the page from their site.

As we are no longer producing new materials for this product line, this minisite will be removed, and all of its related content deleted, as of December 4th, 2009.

This means that content on our support page and the WFRP 2nd Edition Message Boards will also be deleted.

Please take measures to back up any content you wish to save before that time. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

More news from FFG

Fantasy Flight Games is pleased to announce the upcoming release of an exciting new campaign for Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay! In The Gathering Storm, the heroes find themselves caught up in a furious storm of events while visiting a backwater town in the middle of the Reikland. Ancient secrets threaten to stir a long dormant evil and rain doom upon the unsuspecting town of Stromdorf.

The Gathering Storm is a complete campaign for Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay. The story centres around a series of bizarre events that bring the heroes face-to-face with dangerous enemies, moral dilemmas, and the raw fury of nature.

In addition to providing many sessions of exciting adventure, the campaign guide provides detailed information on the town of Stromdorf and a number of its odd citizens. Colourful maps bring Stromdorf and the surrounding region to life. This adventure also contains handouts, cards, components, and playing aids to help the GM manage the game.

The Gathering Storm has it all. Death. Misery. Peril. Suffering. Disaster. And that’s just the weather.

Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay is a roleplaying game that sets unlikely heroes on the road to perilous adventure, in the grim setting of Games Workshop's Warhammer Fantasy world.
