a copy and paste of my introduction in the introduction forum
Well just want to say hello. I'm new to the world of Miniature painting. My normal hobby is ammo reloading and just plain working in my garage, but since my job has displaced me from my home for awhile I became a miniature painter. I was checking out a hobby town near my location and saw some warhammer 40k space marine starter kit that had some small paints and a brush. I said "What the Heck, Why not" and low and behold in two weeks I have painted 15 marines and have an assualt squad awaiting primering tomorrow.
I will be posting pics in the painting section here in a bit.
Anywhoo thanks for having this website because even with a very slow internet connection I have learned a lot recently.
******now pics of my new hobby*******
hope you all like
****update section****
ok well I'm still working on these lil guys, but want to see what you guys think about it. I guess some insight on the WIP. I got the CODEX book for the Marines and reading up on it since I'm new. sooooooo I found the section about making your own chapter...... I like to try to be different so the light bulb kicked on and here I am with an update.
I want some opinions on these guys if I should continue with the Markings on the Shoulder and using the shield symbol for my guidon bearer (banner). I like the name of the Chapter Letters to be "OEM" to stand for "Old Emperor's Mark". Myself being a Marine I like the whole "God Country and Corps" and so thats were I'm going with this for fun.
the Assault Marine is still unfinished and all the guys will be getting a touch ups. Oh yea before I forget the red lettering is roman numeral IV (just chose 4th company to start).
so hope you all like it.

Welcome to the hobby! From what I can tell, you have all of the basics down; while nothing's particularly ornate your lines are clean and all of your colours are well-chosen and placed.
Your Marines are definitely tabletop-ready! Once your entire collection is painted to this standard I recommend bringing it to the next level. Perhaps give all of your armour and metal a Badab Black wash and work on the sergeant's(?) face and hair.

yeah a lot of those little guys will be getting final touch up. The sergeant is not done yet as I still need his base and some finaly touches. The others will get another look over along with a little bit of highlighting. the right shoulders are painted black because I am going to put actual USMC infantry markings on them to denote Rifleman, Automatic rifleman, Ass. Automatic Rifleman, SMAW Gunner, and Machine gunner.
I really need to get down the process for mixing my paints lol cuz I suck at it and thinning the paints more.
Also the assault squad that Im going to work on next is going to be done differently. I made the mistake of assembling the models first and having a really hard time trying to paint the chests and face of a lot of the marines. I left the jet packs on the sprue and cut the sprue so that I glued it to a stick. the stick is shoved into an artificial plant styrofoam holder. That way everything is primed and painted then I'll assemble the figurine.

You got a nice texture on your paint, which is great, as most new painters put it on way too thick. Steadiness, and with it, cleanliness of your lines, will come with practice.
What you could do to improve right off the bat would be to use a wash.

Believe it or not I used a wash but not sure if I'm doing it right. It's right out the bottle from citadel. I'm learning to put dual coats because my first 3piece marines came out a lil sloppy along with the dry brush.

Don't drybrush marines. Their mostly flat surfaces don't take to it as well as things like Orkz or Tyranids. Instead, go in and manually paint the high-lights on the edges. This is especially important on the black parts.
As for the wash, you may want to dilute it less, or even consider making your own mix.

here is a new one for the night. I primered him today along with some assault marines. Anywhoo I think this is the best one so far since I painted him a in pieces then glued the arms and and pack on to him.
enjoy

ok quickly finished these guys up. I know they are not the best in the world, but I think they turned out pretty good for my first whack at it lol.
I think I need to get better light because they look totally different in my dorm room than when taken with a flash photo.
Like being at a bar. Looks good under low light but not that great in the photos lol.
I went ahead and painted all the shoulders in bone color and added the cross with roman numeral IV
I'm also working on the tac squad from my black reach box that I just purchased along with 5 orks.
Those pieces have been gesso'ed because I realized that my spray paint was testors ENAMEL and could not figure out for the life of me why it was so hard to get paint to adhere smoothly to it. A lot better with gesso and I have some Reaper Paint bottles in the mail so I can get to mixing paint better.
Anyways here is what I have of OEM "Old Emperors Mark"
