Is often you find yourself planning armies around them:

Kommander Orsus Zoktavir
Berserker
Spriggan
Doom Reavers (Leader and 5 Grunts)
Doom Reavers (Leader and 5 Grunts)
Greylord Ternion (Leader and 2 Grunts)
Fenris
Man-o-war Drakhun (without dismount)

Models I still need to buy and paint to field this list:

Berserker
Drakhun

I could swap out a Doom Reavers unit to get the Great Bears in there and the dismount
option on the Drakhun...

Anyway, how crazy is this list? I imagine it'll get shot to pieces...

I think you might find yourself getting shot to pieces-- the question is whether or not you'll be shot to pieces before you can win. There's an awful lot of scary stuff to shoot in that list. Againt an army that stresses mobility and shooting, you'll have some serious problems.

Balance in pick up games? Two people, each with their own goals for the game, design half a board game on their own without knowing the layout of the board and hope it all works out. Good luck with that. The faster you can find like minded individuals who want the same things from the game as you, the better.

Should be for some fun times, though.

In case you haven't noticed, I don't really push to win. I try to win with some cool
idea that I have. I think that makes me something of a Johnny player (based on
what I know of that Magic: The Gathering player profile)

I play for the little fun moments. Like when I shift everything in my battlegroup up to 16 inches in a single turn using Mobility cast by eMagnus.

I like to do stuff-- the more sweeping and grand the better.

Tiiimmmmyyy!

Anyway...

If you can keep eButcher protected enough to deliver him, you threaten too many things at once. Unless the person shooting at it is mobile enough to both shoot part of it and stay away from another, I think you'll have lots of opportunity to put this concept through it's paces.

Didn't they end up outside of his control area?

A list I can see giving me trouble would be a Kray shooty list, especially a focus feeder
list where Kraye simply feeds a bunch of chargers focus to shoot the crap out of me.

My friend has just started playing that Kray list. Pinning down those light cav shooting jacks won't be easy. Better play a scenario rather than just for caster kill. I generally find I run every turn and don't bother trying to get charge attacks. I want those chargers engaged such that if he unengages to shoot, the thing engaging the jacks will charge Kray.

No, eMagnus will start with all his jacks to the right. Suddenly they're all on his left. He still moves along at 7" with pathfinder. Seeing things like Manglers and Nomads run 14" give people pause. I like making people react to repositioning heavies over a foot away in a single turn. It feels big and grand (and usually is very effective-- especially after I've clogged everywhere up with steelheads and risen)

Didn't you just hit the chargers when they disengaged from melee?

Ofcourse I take my free strikes, but that doesn't mean I do enough damage to stop them from shooting at something vital. Ofcourse, doom reavers are not something you want to draw free strikes from. Steelhead halbardiers are less of a concern. As long as the charger has a box left in its gun and a box in its cortex, it's a huge threat.

What I find is that if I can engage the chargers, I'll do a bit more damage if they scoot away to shoot. And if I protect my caster such that I don't die from them shooting, I get to charge or move and shoot Kray with something. His large base is actually quite hard to hide. 3 or 4 charging steelheads can really mulch him quite badly. 4 of them charging and doing a CMA is at effective MAT 11 and effective P+S 15 with three dice for damage. Or two shots at MAT 9 and P+S 13 + 3d6. Now imagine what doomreavers would do instead.

Engage the chargers and expect them to provoke free strikes in order to shoot you. Unless you're engaging them with doom reavers, then they might not disengage. If your caster can survive the shooting, you'll be golden on Orsus' feat turn for a really nasty fast attack.

Engaging Kray with all lights is hard. They can move 6" to get about 12" away, shoot with their boosted shots and then move away 5". Even with running at them every turn, they're very, very slippery. And a canny Kray player will take free strikes at the right time to shoot you when you think you finally have them engaged.

Expect the Kray player to take one melee jack to take advantage of that speed spell of Kray's. Ironclads are popular because they're excellent at knocking stuff down. Hammersmiths and Centurions are also very popular.

Going to amend my list to the following, if only because then I get to use actual models
that I have that are painted:

Kommander Orsus Zoktavir
Juggernaut
Kodiak
Doom Reavers (Leader and 5 Grunts)
Doom Reavers (Leader and 5 Grunts)
Man-o-war Shocktroopers (Leader and 4 Grunts)
Fenris

I only own Beast-09, Spriggan, Kodiak, Juggernaut, so I figure I'm safe with matching
the two inexpensive heavies up. Plus, the Kodiak runs for free, so I have something to do on
bad Arcane Dementia turns.

Doom Reavers and Fenris look cool on the table.
