What era?

Wings of War is great. They do WWI and WWII. I'm a big WWII Aviation buff but I like the simplicity of the WWI rules and wide range of aircraft they have out already. It's a bit "bear and pretzels" compared to most other air combat table top games I've played. The original Crimson Skies was pretty good and they did a "clicky" series for that game too that was different but still very fun. That's alternate history fantasy genre though.

My experiences with air combat games have boiled down to two categories: They are either tediously rules and record intensive simulations or smudge stuff and go for the quck-easy-fun-lite-game approach.

You can't fix stupid.

I've played the WWI version of Wings of War, and I would also recommend giving it a try. The rules are easy and it's relatively cheap to get into, plus it's fun, which is always a bonus.
