I picked up the Crimson Fists book today and noticed that the Crimson Fists on the cover (and all chapters it looks like after reviewing the SM codex) have their Chapter emblem on their left shoulder pad. I've recently placed Terminator Honour shoulder pads on thirty of my marines - to designate them as sternguard - on their left shoulder pad (because thats where it is on Terminators) and placed the Crimson Fists shoulder pad on their right shoulder. >>whew, follow all that?! <<

Can someone let me know if this is "fluff" correct? Or which way would be the 'right' way?

Yes, that is indeed fluff correct. When they're terminators or have a crux on their shoulder, they bear their chapter symbol on their right pad and their squad marking on their right knee. So yes, that's right.

Sorry, but it's wrong.

Terminators have their Chapter Badge on the right, and their Crux on the left.

Power Armoured marines have the Chapter badge on the left, with Squad markings (or the crux if you're using that pad for your vets) on the right.

Pre-Heresy the Chapter Badge was on the right. The Codex Astartes moved it to the left, so that it is facing the enemy when the Marine is shooting at them. Terminators retained the Pre-Heresy configuration... I don't remember if a reason for that was ever given.

My opinion is simple. If you like the way it looks keep it that way if not change it.

The chapter badge is placed accordingly to the codex astartes as shown in Insignium astartes on the left shoulder.
Termies got it on the right shoulder, cause GW's old metal terminators had the crux terminatus on the left shoulder and
the shoulderpads of Termies are movable only with plastic termies.

Another point may be that the deathwatch sports its =I= on the left, so they have to field the chapter badge on the right.
Plus there may be chaplains with their badge of office on the left, so chapter is also displayed at the right.

BT field their chapter badge on both shoulders.

So it seems Termies and some models with other insignia on the left shoulder field their chapter badge on the right.

OTOH, your sternguard sport Termie honors ( which no longer exist in the rules ), and these crux terminatus could been
accepted as always on the left shoulder. ( so veterans with crux = left shoulder, no matter if wearing PA or TDA ).

IMO, the fluff allows your config.
