Thunderhawk Pilot Dropping From Orbit

wait wait wait wait... huh..?

This quarter of the city was surprisingly intact considering the ferocity of the fighting thus far. Lord Librarian Sanduar surveyed the city sadly, for he knew that the recently abandoned hab-locks and once busy city streets would soon become nothing but dessicated ruins.

He stared at the buildings across from his company's position and gazed through time, seeing the blue and gold armor of his soon to be foes. He felt his bile rise in his throat at the thought of his enemy. He had taken up an oath to protect the imperium, and now he felt the fabric of his holy oath fraying.

He had never thought that his foes would be the fabled upholders of imperial ideals, but the Ultramarines were seeking the same target as Sanduar and his combany:

Pre-Game analysis: Well damn, what to do what to do. As with all Deep striking armies, I'm going to have to aim for any unprotected vitals that i can deep strike close enough that i can rapid fire/assault them to death. I have the added bonus of a jumping sternguard unit and a really potent hero that will allow me to decimate clustered power armored marines, while giving the sternguard firing base a measure of defense, and this comes in a nice highly mobile teleporting shell so long as i have plenty of locator beacons on the field...

Basically, I can't really decide which targets to attack until my friend (winston) deploys. I can only hope that he leaves something for me to attack. Also, I desperately need to keep the scout bikers alive, so that I can remain highly mobile and quickly deny objectives if they need to be.

Time to play! Will update asap!

*** just a side note, in order to make things easier, both in telling and reading, i'll be using cardinal directions, with my deployment zone being south, my opponent's north etc.

Deployment.

I lost rolls for both deployment and first turn. Since I really only had one non infiltrating unit, it didn't bother me too much, but i always prefer to deploy last just so i can get a better lay of the land... Anyways, I deployed my Thunderfire cannon on top of the roof of a ruined vehicle garage that gave it a commanding view of where I knew captain popo and his men would arrive.

Winston (my friend and opponent in this round, who will be hereafter referred to as Captain Popo) he had a keg of Fenrisian beer within the eastern quarter of his deloyment zone amid the wreckage of a Budwiser Valkyrie, and deployed Tactical squads Alpha and Beta in and around the terrain. In addition, almost at his line of retreat board edge, he placed his assault marines ready to counter attack any assault I made on that objective.

To the west lay the second cask, it was situated near a sandbag emplacement where apparently efforts had already been made to recover the peerless elixir. Tasked with retrieving this objective, Captain Popo deployed his terminators, dreadnought, and tactical squad Charlie. Captain Popo himself then made an appearance, with he, his honor guard unit, and the sternguard veterans of 6th company stradling the center of his line, ready to intervene wherever they were deemed necessary.

My scouts I combat squadded, one squad deployed to my own cask of Fenrisian liquor, the other atop a large building that overlooked the cask . It had been discovered in the ruins of a small parish... the ministorium has yet to comment on this finding. By the labours of techmarine Bob, these ruins (almost directly across from captain popo's cask of ale) were reinforced to provide the key position better defences as more scouts, this time astride lethally quick lizards crept towards the eastern portion of the 6th company's line.

Captain Popo, recognizing the exposed objective in the center as a potential killing field, tasked his scouts to act as an overwatch for operations there.

Turn 1: A wave of blue and gold surged forward as the ultramarines rushed to dig in and take defensive positions. Captain Popo (attached to honor guard) and Dreadnought led the charge, reaching the midpoint of the board. The Terminators and Charlie advanced in the west, the terminators nearly reaching the sandbag emplacements, while the tactical squad bravely used them as a screen. In the east, action was far more subdued, as Tactical squads Alpha and Beta dug into their positions among the Budwiser Valkyrie.

Shooting:
A hail of bolter, assault cannon, and lascannon rounds bracketed Brother Bob and his beloved thunderfire cannon, the cannon was pounded again and again by bolter shells but held fast until a river of bullets fired from the terminator's assault cannon tore it to pieces. Brother Bob was far more fortunate, and was able to shrug the shots directed at him. Snipers also bracketed the Scout bikers and managed to kill two of their number.

Turn 1:
A deep rumble shook the battle field as drop pods fell from the battle barges in low orbit. Rending the air in their fiery descent, they crashed into the ground. Tactical squad Kuro slammed down adjacent the ruins of another small temple, and, using the drop pod and ruins as cover, they took up firing positions with Captain Popo and honor guard in their sights. Saduar's drop pod followed, but before it could make touchdown, it corkscrewed wildly and flew directly towards Kuro's position, coming to a rest a mere two inches from Kuro's Drop pod. Sanduar and the Librarians escort of sternguard charged out of their Drop Pod, but instead of the relatively unprotected TAC squads of the 6th company, they found themselves staring down the barrels of not just Tactical squad Alpha and Beta, but the sternguard veterans of the 6th as well as Popo and his legendary honor guard.

Rushing to support the now exposed librarian and retinue, the scout riders sped towards Squad Alpha, which was closest to Sanduar and sat directly on the northernmost objective. Now bereft of his Thunderfire cannon, Techmarine Bob crept carefully over the roof heading towards the lip of the building in the hopes of drawing away attention from the now precarious western front.

Shooting: Now desperate, Sanduar and his escort fired at the honor guard, hoping to eliminate at least this potent threat to them. Firing a hail of melta shots, and hellfire rounds, and supported my psychic lightning from Sanduar's ancient force staff, all members of the honour guard were eliminated, but Captain Popo stood tall and shrugged off all fire directed at him. The scouts Fired at Squad Alpha and in a hail of bolter shots and grenades reduced the squad to a mere three men, despite this, they held firm. The scouts overlooking the eastern front fired at the assault squad lurking in the ruins and forced them to dive for cover among the shattered Valkyrie.

Turn 2:

Movement
Charging towards the drop pods and their exposed passengers, the sternguard, Tactical squads Alpha and Beta, and Captain Popo formed a truly intimidating firing wall.

The fighting on the east front had begun in earnest.

The dreadnought trudged into the sandbag emplacement in order to clear it of any potential mining that may have been done by the scout riders, and, thus cleared, Charlie moved into position in the fortifications, capturing the second casket of booze. Hoping to support the eastern flank, the terminators marched towards squad Kuro.

Shooting: The guns of captain Popo and his men deafened Sanduar. After the roar of bolter, vengeance, sniper, hellfire, and plasma rounds subsided, only four of the sternguard remained, protected by the dome of psychic force that the librarian had cloaked them all in. The dreadnought and terminators fired at Brother bob again, but he displayed a hithertoo unknown knack for avoiding fire, and came through a second wave of shooting unscathed.

Turn 2:

Movement: Squad Shiro came down in the fiery commet that was their Drop Pod, and rushed out of their transport south of the 6th company's assault marines. The vanguard too, dropped by low flying thunderhawk and guided by locator beacon, landed in front of the oncoming Veterans of the 6th.

Meanwhile, Squad Kuro moved westward into the small ruined church to gain a superior firing position while Sanduar and company dashed towards the firing line formed by Alpha and Beta squads. Riding their snarling cold ones, the scouts also prepared to join the fray, riding between the drop pods that had deposited the Master Librarian and Squad Kuro in order to take up firing positions.

Shooting:

Fueled by rage and hatred at the massacring of his squadmates, Master Librarian Sanduar tapped his immense reserves of willpower and brought the seething flames of the warp crashing down amongst the ranks of Alpha and Beta Squads. The heat of the warp boiled armor and twisted flesh and the astares of squad Alpha were no more. Tactical squad Beta also suffered four casualties, and further fire support from the mounted scouts reduced the squad to three men.

Combined fire from both the newly arrived vanguard squad, the snipers hidden in the collapsed church, and Squad Kuro sheathed Popo and his sternguard, wiping out another 4 men. Led by Captain Marneus Popo's sterling example, they held fast in the face of this firepower and readied to whether the furious assault of the vanguard units confronting them.

Finally, weapons fired from Squad Shiro and the second unit of scout snipers claimed the lives of 4 more assault marines, causing them to again flee for cover.

Assault: The charge of the Vanguard was brutal. Despite Popo's heroic leadership, which indeed moved his men to superhuman efforts, they were dragged down by the superior training and weapons of the assault unit until Popo too was brought down, felled by the revered relic blade of the Sergeant, but not before his comrades felled two of their attackers.

Summary: Here's what's left on the field at this moment in the game sorry if the narration is a bit

Ultrasmurfs :

3 men of squad Beta
10 men of squad CHarlie
All terminators
Dreadnought
5 Scouts
5 Men of the assault squad.

My side:
All of squad Kuro and Shiro
4 Sternguard (3 combi melta, 1 combi flamer)
All of both scout combat squads
Techmarine Bob
3 of my vanguard
8 Scout bikers
Master Librarian Sanduar

Turn 3:

Movement:

The situation was clearly dire for what was left of the 6th company. Leaving Charlie in custody of the keg, the terminators and dreadnought made towards the now heavily contested Fenrisian beer on the all out battle field that was the eastern objective.

Shooting:

The lascannon and heavy flamer blasts seared the vanguard huddled in the ruins, annihilating one of them, while the terminators opened up with a fusillade of bolter and assault cannon fire that took the lives of four marines in squad Kuro.

It was in this hour of darkness for the 6th company that special weapons trooper Duran, seeing his dead and dying battle brothers littering the battle field, took up his flamer against the enemy. Urging his squadmates onward, he dashed madly towards the white and red and gold of the insolent Angels Malignant Chapter where they were packed most densely together, crowded as they were by the presesnce of their drop pods. With a reassuring roar, his flamer burst into life, and soaked his foes in burning promethium. Sternguard and scout riders alike where covered in flame.

When the flames finally died, keening death screeches of burning reptiles rang in his ears as he saw the carnage he had wrought upon his enemy.

A veteran of the Angels lay dead, his armor boiled to flesh by his righteous flame, and only one of the accursed scouts remained.

Assault: (I just want to get this out of the way first... Yes... i was stupid here, i didn't pay attention to just how close Winston's Dread and termies had gotten to my squads... it was my mistake, and if he had had more assault units like this i coulda lost the game here)

Barreling through the ruins of the church, The dreadnought of the Ultramarine's reserve company obliterated the remaining vanguard, barely even feeling the sting of their power weapons. The terminators also navigated the difficult terrain with ease, bringing to bear their mighty powerfists. The light of the emperor smiled upon Kuro's squad however, as only one man fell to the terminator's superior weapons.

Squad Kuro beat a hasty retreat from close combat, knowing full well that they could not hope to match terminators in close quarters.
