is it possible

could the imperium strip mine a whole planet, was it even possible pre heresy

my background had the system habited by a automated strip mining team, thing of a cruiser sized combine harvester depositing building size blocks of pure elements behind it. these are picked up by small transports and taken into high orbit for holding. but would this be possible?

I dont see why not to be honest. Given the scale on which the Imerium does things.

The only reason they might not is because the Imperium measures its power in the number of planets.

On the other hand, if they come across a lifeless world, then why not.

Somewhere in south-central England.

It would be easier to strip mine the asteroid belt.

The rocks are already broken down into manageable size chunks.

They just need crunching down, refining and boosting the ingots to some collection facility where they can be fed into orbiting factories or shuttled down to the planet's surface.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

Roids are prolly the more likely answer. I mean just look at Eve. I do it every day. Its pretty easy.

It wouldn't be a very big planet, maybe the equivalent of a moon, but I think yes it's entirely possible. Maybe they're working on an asteroid belt or something?
