What is used for currency in 40k?

I know the orks use teeth and...the orks use teeth and thats about it.

What does the imperium use? eldar? tau?

Does each race use there own? or does everyone have some standerd form of currency? or a little of both?

The Imperium use Throne Gelt, or more commonly known as Thrones. It is the official currency, although there are many forms of local tender (as per Dark Heresy Core Rulebook).

To give you an idea of about how much a throne is and what you can get with it:

Common Lasgun: 75 tg (throne gelt)

Common Boltgun: 500 tg

Common Chainsword: 275 tg

Common Powersword: 2500 tg

Guardsman's Flak Armor: 300 tg

Power Armor (non-astartes): 15,000 tg

Stormtrooper Carapace: 3,750 tg

Voxcaster: 300 tg

Auspex: 145 tg

Ive also heard about imperial "aquilas" as well as good ol' credits. For Tau I might have heard of the Tau'ler (not sure on this one)

Well, for the Imperium, there is no standard monetary system. Some might use Throne Gelt, as FowPheonix135 suggests, but others use "Credits," bonds, Imperial Coin (supposedly of gold), Imperials (paper money?), among many others I have heard of. I would suppose most systems have their own monetary system, where inter-system trade is done through markets or bartering.

Just because anyone agrees with anyone, doesn't mean they are correct. Beware the thin line between what is "Correct" and what is "Popular."

I know that most Imperial Hive Worlds, definately Necromunda and maybe places like Armageddon, use Credits.

The Imperium is so large and paralysingly bureaucratic it can take centuries to fill a requisition order and despatch the goods.

Tithes to the Empire are done in terms of 1,000s of men for the IG, numbers of tanks, and so on, not cash.

Interstellar transportation is a tightly controlled government monopoly.

In such a system, there is no point in a universal currency and exchange rate applied throughout the Galaxy. It wouldn't work, because the exchange rates would change during transport of goods, and the system would never settle down with the currency unit being worth the same everywhere.

Therefore each system or local cluster probably has its own currency, and inter-system trade to the extent that it actually happens, is done on the basis of barter and Imperial fiat.

Fluff: The only form of currency in the Imperium of Mankind is blood. That which you shed and that which your enemy does, all else trivial. There is NO common currency between races only the trade of goods and services.

THIS IS NOT CANNON BUT IT IS THE ONLY WAY I CAN SEE IT WORKING!

My Answer: The Imperium might be a Feudal Socialist Barter and Credit system. Although the Administratum might assign a global currency to each item in a planitary tithe, this would not be used and is just a set way to monitor the debt and payment of that tithe.

Example: A planet might owe the Imperium 1,000,000,000 Throne Gelt per cycle. A planet would never be able to obtain enough Throne Gelt from other planets per cycle to pay without contributing to MASSIVE inflation. So the Administratum taxes would be paid something like this:

- One Division of Imperial Guardsmen pays off 1X Throne Gelt of debt. This would cause overpopulated planets to provide the undertrained cannon fodder they are so famous for.

- One Division of Tanks of the type *** made to these specs and with the blessing of the Tech Priests is worth 4X Throne Gelt. This would encourage a planet to become a forge world when otherwise there is no incentive.

- Food is worth 2X Throne Gelt per Y amount. This would make sure that the Imperium is always supplied with what it needs.

- etc...

I can also imagine a stock market like system that instead of showing variable values of stocks bought and sold it informs planetary governors that food for example is needed more then troops ATM so it will be worth more come tithing time. Again IDK about official fluff but what other way would an economy of this size work?

It would work like the world economy did in the early 19th century, before the invention of telegraph and steam shipping.

So just like in real life the lowest bidder is still over-charging.

Actually, in Dark Heresy the guardsman's flak armor is pretty good. It is almost as sturdy as light carapace, at a fraction of the cost.

And in the real world, My IBA was perfectly fine. I was confident in the money that the government spent on it.
