Im going to begin reading the 40k books. Where is the best place to start? I plan on focusing on Space Marines fluff. Im thinking starting with the Horus Heresy? Or is there books for prior to that?

Horus Heresy would be the best place to start. I believe there are currently 10 titles in the series, with another one planned for release this month. Although be prepared for a long haul with these books, some of them can be very dry.

I do have to give a hearty recommendation to the Space Wolf series of novels, all about Ragnar Blackmane and his rise to power. They're an excellent read.

Ultramarine's Omnibus was also an amazing one.

If you want to look at Chaos, I'd go with the Word Bearers Trilogy. Dark Apostle, Dark Disciple, and Dark Creed. It was a lot of fluff packed into all of that.

Also, as a warning. The Horus Heresy's 4th and 5th installment, and a few others, are just major repeats of the same story. It is from a different perspective each time and it lets you understand what happened in the previous book better. So I stress, READ THE FIRST 5 IN ORDER. Fulgrim, the 5th, was a page turner, even though it was the longest. Definitely going to be your big structural peak for the series.

"From the fires of Betrayal unto the blood of revenge we bring the name of Lorgar, the Bearer of the Word, the favored Son of Chaos, all praise be given to him. From those that would not heed we offer praise to those who do, that they might turn their gaze our way and gift us with the Boon of Pain, to turn the Galaxy red with the blood, and feed the hunger of the Gods."

Best 40k book ever.
Graham McNeil does a good job of explaining things in the 40k universe
